Horse Question

Never buy trouble, particularly when it comes to horses. You are just setting yourself up for a lot of heartache. The only way I personally would ever consider taking that horse is if he was free and all I wanted was a pasture ornament. I once had a horse that caught her foot in the fence when she was a yearling. Sometimes she was sound and sometimes she limped but we could never use her for anything. Fortunately for her, I had a lot of pasture and she was able to live her life out there. The best advice I or anyone can give you is to find yourself another horse. One that is sound.

If the gelding has a chronic limp it would probably get worse with age. Has a veterinarian looked at this horse. If so, what does he/she say about the geldings future? If I were you I'd want to talk with the vet and see what he says. My Guess is that he would tell you to keep looking.
If this gelding becomes a really serious possibility I will definitely have a vet come take a look. Thank you!

Dont buy. A horse with a leg injury is a big vet bill waiting to happen. Riding him could cause further irritation to it and he could be lame for life. Then you will have a pretty, expensive, lawn ornament. The horse could also be on pain even tho he doesnt show it.
I had a horse for years. Raised and trained her myself. In her last five years I had her, she developed a stifle problem. So until one day, when I found her down in her stall and had to put her down, she was officially retired from riding. It got to where the farrier couldnt even trim her. You could see the pain on her face. I gave her stuff for it and it helped, but only to a point.
Any horse you get should be vet checked. If the seller isnt willing to let you do that, be suspicious. If you are not familiar with how to care for a horse, work at a stable to learn what you need to learn. A horse is a big investment. Not just money, but time and emotional attachment.

I’ve had horses since 1970. How old is this gelding? Is there an obvious deformity of the leg and or hoof? Is theIs horse already saddle broke and if so how broke vs your ability as a rider? My advice is to pass and look for the best conformed horse you can find. Even just pleasure riding the ability of the horse to do what you want without discomfort will make a huge difference in how pleasurable it is for both of you. Also eventually you may want to do more with your horse and you might as well have something that is capable of doing more with you.

I have been looking to buy a horse for a while now, and we found out some of our friends sell horses. He has this one gelding he is willing to sell to me for around $650 or trade. The gelding is beautiful, and he is the perfect height for me. All of their horses are very gentle and his sire is a champion barrel racer who is 25 and in perfect condition. The only problem with the gelding is that he said that when he was a colt he was playing with another colt and got his hoof stuck in a gate and hurt himself. He said he sees him limping sometimes. I don't plan on entering any competitions, so this gelding would just be for pleasure riding. Do you guys think his hoof would become a problem in the future and that I should just keep looking at different horses? Or are there things I could do to strengthen his leg? Thank you so much!
Why is the guy selling him??

It would really depend on how serious the injury is.....Has the guy ever had anyone look at it? Does he ever ride this horse? Does it seem to limp when you are riding it? Does he seem to be in pain?

I would pass! It isn't worth it. The horse obviously has a really bad leg injury and you would probably have to pay a lot of money on medications to get it better, and even then it might not work. How old is the horse? Have you looked on craigslist?
I would have a vet come and look at it too!
I can't remember how old he said he was but he is around 10. I have looked on Craigslist, the good ones go so fast!

I have not ridden him yet because we have been out of town, but he told us that his family has ridden him quite a bit. If I remember correctly he said that they never had any problems with his hoof while riding, so it may just be a thing that acts up every now and then.
