It depends on where you are. Some places it's legal to kill and eat your own animals, but illegal to sell it to others for human consumption. Kind of like the whole raw milk deal, you can do it to your own animals but can't sell it to others and whatnot.
During the depression, they ate anything. I remember hearing stories where they wasted nothing, eating the peels to fruit. Our great great grandfather watched us peel an orange or grapefruit and then would proceed to tell us that during the depression you ate the WHOLE thing, peel, seeds, and all.
