Horses!!!!!!!!

A horse isn't cheaper to buy or keep because its small. They are all pretty much the same in terms of what they need: vet care, feed, hoof care, shelter, grooming, companionship. You might want to get some experience by volunteering at your vet's or a riding centre for kids with special needs or a pony sanctuary? You could join your local 4H club or Pony Club. You don't necessarily have to buy a pony to include horses in your life or to make a difference in a horse's life. Just follow your heart, right?

I am in 4h and I am in a pony club. It just not the same. It's different then being able to look out your windo and see their face or going out there to walk them, talk to them, when ever you want.

Please don't think my response(s) were meant to discourage you from something you want - I only raised the questions I did to be sure that you were going into this as prepared as possible because I have seen firsthand the issues that arise when someone forgets to allow for the maintenance costs associated with taking on the responsibility of a horse (or any animal)....and that is an easy thing to have happen when you are caught up in the excitement of the idea of something.

SternRose, if you are doing 4H and Pony Club, you probably have some very experienced horse people around you. I hope you will consult with them before you make any moves towards getting a horse. Lots of people have dreams about horse ownership; sometimes, reality winds up being more like a nightmare. I have seen some dreadful mismatches when someone who didn't know what they were doing bought an animal that was totally unsuitable for their level of experience (or rather, lack of it).

Minis, especially young ones, can be a handful - they have a whole lot of personality crammed into their small bodies! There are special issues regarding feeding and vet care of minis. Sometimes I wonder how I ever felt my life was complete without my minis (I have 3), but they are a constant responsibility, too - at least twice a day, rain or shine, 365 days of the year.

'Scuse me now - gotta go feed the horses.

I understand what you guys are saying. I in my opinion is very responsible, maybe not responsible enough for a horse right know, but that's why I said in a few years. But with your guys answers to my questions it has mad me take a step back and ask my self, am I realy ready for a horse. I feel like not yet, but maybe in a few years. But that's why I want to start saving now.

A few more questions. I found a mini breeder $300 for a mini horse colt, weanling. Does about $500 sound a bout right for fencing(electrics, o and does the fence always have to be on?)

I think its very touching that you have such an admirable goal, saving for your horse, and I will be thinking about you and hoping the most wonderful horse comes into your life. Keep us posted.
