Houdan Xs, what do you all think?

Quote:
Really?!?! But but but WHY?! Simone has the red wattles and comb, though!

red does not always = roo. I am loooking at crests and overall body. No guarantees on Duke, even less on Simone.

I personally find that roos have far more personality than most hens. I've never had one I couldn't tame, but them I don't keep aggressive breeds. In general, if asked where I preferred hens or roos, the answer would be roos.

Youre going to hate me, but I think they are both roos, too. I had a white capped black polish guy and he looked JUST like yours did with the "hair cut" and face. Dottie is the black and white one, right?

Yes, Dottie is the black and white one. S/he still hasn't developed any redness, no wattle or comb. Simone is sprouting some new crest feathers....they are very pointy

S/he still has the same amount of redness and just the tiniest hint of wattles developing. This sucks, I adore these two so much. To make matters worse, I'm already thinking that my bantam white crested black Polish chick is a cockerel, as well. That'll be 3 out of 7. Waaaaaaahhhhhhh!

I know this is a really sad way of looking at it but when those hormones kick in, it might be easier to choose who needs to go. Always happens to me. Last year I had a little rooster, the first one I've ever hatched on my own, and raised him as a great pet. He often followed me around and was the offspring of my nicest, favorite hen but my meanest rooster.

When he turned around 6 months old, he attacked me for the first time and after that it was a usual thing. When he went after my 7 year old brother, though, he met his fate via hungry neighbor. I still get very sad, because I did love him. Alot.

I know from experience that some of the better boys will come along if they are lowest in the peckng order. It's that, 'Well, we have nothing to gain from the flock so I'll be your friend,' attitude. And don't give up hope yet.

I've said it before and I shall say it again. With chickens, not everything is quite what it seems.

Read my signature. Those were my two last roosters. From my origional flock. I couldn't take the abuse anymore regardless of how much I loved them. Two and a half whole years I spent trying to tolerate them. Two and half years full of memores that were bad, good, and also ones that I will never forget.

If I do have to re-home these guys I hope I can find a great pet only placement. My little brother's boss just started keeping chickens for pet/egg purposes and so far only has a little lone bantam pullet. Word on the street is that he would like a roo for her. I told my bro to have him wait a couple weeks and I'll hook him up. I haven't decided for sure if I'll keep one yet or not. It would be extremely tough to choose which to give up. I'm really hoping that one of these boogers is fooling us and is a pullet. If that's the case, I'll likely keep both as long as neighbors are cool with it.

Ugh. First crow yesterday. I'm pretty sure it was Simone (the darker one). I'm pretty convinced that they're both cockerels at this point but I think I'll wait another week to be sure. Such a bummer, they're awesome birds.
