Houdans

Now that's cool.
Can I have a couple Houdans like that and a copy of the book?
Reallly nice find!

Gonna be a tough winter waiting on spring to start up again so I can get hatching.
Rational thought and some prodding said mid winter probably isnt the best time to move into a coop.
No hatching for me.

It's been forever since I've posted.. Really forever.. I have my breeding flock picked out for spring, and they are only 16 weeks old, but I thought I'd share some pictures of them. I quite like my breeding male (I also kept two backups).

Here's my top choice for male. I had 8 males. I sold off 4 pairs and one extra male.

Here is Gigi 2.0

He's preening in much of the photos

Compared with a Rock that is three weeks younger.

This is a backup boy

Again with him..

Now for some of the girls (I have seven)

Since my pure houdan chicks died last year I don't get on this thread very often, but I have 2 hens that are 1/2 houdan. Now I have one of their chicks that is now 1/4 houdan. I have thought from hatch it was a boy based on nostrils, but since noticing the small size of the comb I am second guessing and really hoping (b/c of comb) it is a girl so thought I'd post a couple of pics so more experienced houdan people could say if they think girl or not.

So.....my little pair of M Houdan babies are pretty much grown up most of the way now. The roo went to a girl we know that has room for a NOISEY roo like him! Hahaha! He was seriously too much for my location from the time he started crowing. But we got to see him at the fair last weekend......and he had a blue ribbon. BUT there were only 2 of that kind there. I still think he turned out nicely with a beautiful tail but too much white overall. She is too white as well. And does not stop talking either. She must still have some maturing to do because she hasn't started laying yet. Every other chicken I have that is the same age has been laying for quite awhile now.

From the last few pic posts I have a question- which is proper by SOP? Red comb or (mulberry?) Black comb? I've read that with some breeds mulberry is called for in the SOP but red is accepted in the US. I haven't shown before but have 5 mottled houdans 1 week old, wanting to breed for correct traits in the future.

Houdans should have a bright red face, comb & wattles.Any black in these areas would be 2 point defect.

their crests are so much bigger than the buff polish. These guys have quickly become favorites!
