Houdans

These chicks went from running from my hand to flying up on my shoulders while refilling their water as soon as they went in the coop from the brooder. I am very taken with them.

I entered my two pullets in a show this past weekend to see how they would do (expecting them to be the only two there) as was very pleasantly surprised to find that 1) another Houdan had been entered and 2) my gals placed BB/BV and reserve BB/BV!

Now to find a new rooster or hatching eggs! :( All girls, no boy.

Pic of your beauties please! Great job for u and your houdans. I'm not sure what gender mine are but I think more girls than boys with rounded crests.

These are the two pullets taken 2 weeks ago. The one in front is the one that placed BB/BV, one in back was reserve. The front girl is still growing back tail feathers, but her overall type is better than the girl in back. I'm hoping she gets even better at maturity.

I took pics at the show with my cell phone that I'll try and load, but they're not the greatest quality.

For those of you in driving distance to the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville), the UofA has a line of pretty good Houdans that probably have the best size of any in the country, and have good type and color as well. They absolutely do not ship eggs, but if someone is able to pick them up, they offer eggs. Also no live birds, only eggs. Just something to consider, as I don't think they have any probls with inbreeding either.

Very good to know if I ever get near Arkansas. My pullets came from Urch this spring.

They are great looking and I love the 'snow spots'. Mine are 6 weeks old now, I had to put about 6 of my crested chicks back in the outdoor brooder without the light. In the coop it is more open with the roosts and all. 5 of the crested ones didn't look like they were handling the weather so well so I decided to put them in the "overly protected" brooder just in case. I also put in the mottled houdan with the biggest crest to make me feel reassured that it would be okay. I had a container for water instead of a regular waterer and my beautiful fully crested houdan had icicles this morning from getting dipped in the water! I defrosted and dried the little bugger and will definitely be keeping a check on all crests just in case.

Mighty quiet here! Okay, so out of the 4 that I have left 2 are males and 2 are females:) So when do I start seeing spots because at 9 weeks old now they are still reverse skunk stripe? I hope it doesn't take until their first molt but am willing to wait....

I remember others saying that the mottling and full color doesn't kick in strong until after the first molt.
My girls didn't change much at all, but got a bit darker. It was pretty much what they looked like when they hit adulthood.
However they changed a lot from when they were young pullets, so I can see it both ways.
