Houdans

Kassaundra, I too am empathetic for your loss. I never thought it was a big deal before losing my little Marans this week. I don't get attached generally speaking, but I was really liking the cockerel in particular. I can't imagine losing a bird I was really really in admiration of. I got materials for more coops and runs here this week, two days after losing my young ones. Do you have any plans to replace the ones you lost? I actually told the kids we weren't getting a cat, even though there are plenty of chipmunks mice and squirrels for it, because of the chick/duckling concern.

Yes, they are stray.  A beagle in the yard w/ your chickens, !!!!!!!!  you are lucky, bet that made your heart stop for a minute!  We have not had any preditor issues until now w/ the chicks.  Nothing is bothering the adult chickens at all.  This next batch will have less freedom for sure (but still plenty of space) but they will be much more protected.  I had wanted to raise the chicks w/ the adult flock, but since that isn't working they will be raised next to and in sight of the adult flock and live in the same coop, just in a fenced off area, until big enough to not be hawk or cat food.
Definitely did! Know where the dog came from? Two houses down and they have chickens as well, so he was well used to them. Not so much a rooster attacking him ;) Gigi is a good guard rooster, that's for sure! He totally respects us, but I did catch him chasing my nephews who were taunting the hens. They are 8 years old, and awful children, so I'm kind of glad for it

He completely leaves my 4 year old nephew alone. If it became an issue of safety, I would think of something. Right now he is just hormonal and protective, and gives everyone that lives directly in our house plenty of space and respect.

Hai y'all! Some of you may remember me from a few years ago, I was BantamBoy (then changed name to V Comb). I got locked out of that account and decided to come back here! Here is a shot of my Lucky, which we always thought was a boy but I've had it for almost two years and no crowing

His sister Charm sadly was killed by the neighbours dog, so now we just have one Houdan.

Kassandra, so sorry for your loss. We have had a few birds lost to preditors over the last few years and it is always hard.

Welcome back Natural eye. Look forward to your input and love your bird.

Just had to crow a little

we are having our fair this week and my son showed Spike (our female) and Zeus (the male we originally thought was going to be a female). They both did will and received 1st place ribbons. He beat himself out of champion however, our LF Salmon Favorelle trio took Champion Jr. Trio and one of the girls took Grand Champion Jr. Large Fowl.

After fair chaos is over I need to post updated pics.

Thanks for listening to me crow.

Welcome natural eye, pretty houdan.

puddin fluff congrats to your son and his wins!!!!
Thanks Kass, and I notice another thing we have in common, My Araucana Roo is also named Arie!! He didn't go to the fair as he has a beautiful tail, but his girl did, she also received a 1st ribbon but her hatchmate (fav) beat her out as well for the big ribbon.

My Ari is still very young, but I'm excited to see how he will turn out, I've seen his father and he shines so bright in the sun you almost need sunglasses. He is tufted and rumpless, but I believe his leg color is wrong for show. I have never gone to a show let alone entered one.

Is there a purpose for shows other then bragging rights???

yes it is alot about bragging rights lol... but u can get APA points and climb the ranks all the way to master breeder if you are into that kind of thing and a member of the APA... also its a lot of fun... and it is good advertizement if you are selling chicks or eggs or birds... there is also a large sale area at most shows so it is a good spot to find new breeds and or bloodlines... and yes it does make your birds more valuable if they are from show winners...
