Houdans

Have you tried the stick treatment yet?

IE: Follow him around for a while and tap him with a stick.

Worked wonders for Gigi.

I am totally hooked on my "water boarding" idea for an aggessive roo. My Oreo had been a great roo not aggressive at all until this past summer when he lost his mind and started attacking me, I would have eaten him except I didn't have a gun yet (my preferred way of dispatching) so out of despitation, and rage the last day he attacked me and put a hole in my leg, I was gardening and had the water hose w/ a nozzel on jet and everytime he looked at me I would spray on jet aiming for his head and would continue to spray until he was out of water range. Now in all honesty my goal was to drown him and make myself feel better (I was very mad and bleeding) anyway it didn't drown him he would run from me for months afterward and has not attacked me since.

Puddin I'd take him in a minute, they do airmail?
I'll pay shipping!
I would love to get him to someone who could use him for breeding. He is good stock. Unfortunatly we have tried several things and if he sees you looking at him he runs away but when you turn your back he will attack. He's not completly stupid.

We've carried him around, smushed his face in the dirt, my first response is to kick him away for my own protection and then I have to corner him to pick him up. We have a squirt gun down by the coop, I guess I need to fill it up and keep it handy but I figure he will be smart enought to notice if I am holding it or not and for many tasks I need both hands. Anyway, I wish I could find someone who appreciates the breed, but if not, there is a local group who buys/sells all kinds of poultry and after the 1st of March, he is headed their way.

I'm sharing my new barn plans with those threads I shared the news of the fire...

I'm drawing up barn plans. One floor only with the appearance of a loft, but no loft.. I don't want to take stairs anyway, and it would be too costly.

So this is the look we are going for outside. But bigger... All the doors will be double dutch style. More windows than in picture.

Hope this makes sense... I drew this out myself. I didn't like the plans that the image above showed. I need a really big area for the poultry, as well as breeding pens against the back for outdoor runs. I hope it brings it up larger when you click.. The long boxes against the wall are windows.. the doors are open. The little square boxes are outlets. Everything else is marked (except the lights in the 14 x 4 foot breeding pens (which by the way - 1 is supposed to be 6 x 14 feet.. whoops. Will have to fix it.

Thoughts? Did I mention all doors are double dutch style?
Oh and the hot water tank and fuse box will go in the tractor or wash/feed room.
Our last barn was bigger if you are thinking this is crazy big.

Looks really nice and to me there's no such thing as too big on a farm.

I finally got my fun "Toy" incubator and am setting two Houdan eggs. Not sure if they are silkie cross or pure Houdan.
The Houdan girls like our Houdan roo better, but them silkie boys are charming enough on some days to make the grade ;)

We can ship them to the states if anyone wants one. Although its just 2 eggs, it'sfully automatic.
Lets hope the QC checks go well. Might be able to make a few bucks selling them (hehe)

Plus my wife has been getting into her creative side. She made a funny book bag and started learning how to carve stones to make traditonal chinese name stamps. Pretty cool~

Very cool stuff. Did you "build" the incubator or is it actually something you bought?

Thanks

Yes it will house goats and hopefully a llama for protection.
Did you have llamas before? We have considered them. My hubby just likes the animal. He really wants alpacas but they need guarding as well since they are smaller. We were trying to figure out if the llamas would keep the hawks from attacking the chickens as well as all the k-9 creatures.

Dogs don't usually prevent hawks. They are too quick, but they can deter them a bit I believe.

We had a goshawk attack with our dog around.

I have never had a llama, but the only two guard animals I came up with other than a dog are llamas and donkeys. Donkeys are out. They are way too loud. Llamas are quiet, and will stomp a coyote to death if it comes near their territory (same with foxes and strange dogs as well).

But to find one that is good at guarding, friendly to humans and children and our own dogs will be a bit of an issue. I'd like to get one very young. It will be housed with the goats.

I ment llamas preventing k-9 predators.

Guess if you got a "bird dog"maybe it would go for hawks!

There are several web sites about llamas that give really good info. I can't remember the one I got on but I think it was like the Llama association of the U.S. or something like that and they gave really good info. about temperment etc.

Nice barn

aoxa.

Chambertin, that is one funky cool incubator. It sort of looks like a helmet the pink ranger would wear =)
