Chapter two- Going to the U.S.

It was the best feeling ever. I had always wanted to go to a different country and now was my chance. I had my luggage ready and I was now waiting for my mom to finish packing. I was impatient so I started to ask my mom when we were going to leave, but she got annoyed and told me to go outside and play with my friends. I thought that was a great idea since I was bored and it would keep me busy until my mom and sister were ready. I went outside, but nobody was there which seemed odd because they’re always playing soccer. I went back inside and took a nap.
It was 8pm already and my mom still wasn’t done packing, but thankfully my sister was. I asked my sister if she wanted to go look for our friends so we could play soccer. At first she didn’t want to go, but then I told her that this could be our last time so she agreed. We stepped outside and surprisingly they were all there playing soccer. We told them the good news, but my sister’s best friend looked kind of sad but it was expected because it could be the last time we would ever see her again. We played soccer for about an hour until my mom went outside and told us that it was time to go get a taxi because we were about to leave. Our friends hugged us for the last time and went with us to get a taxi.
I wasn’t really sad at all, but excited. I grabbed my luggage and got inside the taxi. A few minutes later my mom and sister came with their luggage. My brother was with them, but I thought he was staying. We finally got to the bus station and when I got out of the taxi I saw my aunt there. It was starting to get really strange. My mom then got out of the taxi and told my sister and I that we should go hug our aunt and our brother because they came here just for that. I disliked farewells, but not this one. While we were hugging our brother, he started crying which then made us cry. We said goodbye and got into the bus that was going to take us to US. I felt sad because my brother wasn’t coming with us, but he had to finish school so he could have a better life.
I sat close to a window so that I could watch my brother and aunt as they got smaller and smaller. I felt really uncomfortable on the bus and couldn’t sleep so I just starred outside the window watching things as we passed them. Before I knew it, I was asleep. The following morning my mom woke us up so that we could get ready to get on another bus. When we got into to the other bus, there was this kid that seemed just as bored as I was so I went to talk to him. I asked him where he was going and he said that he was going to Texas, the same place we’re going to. I talked to him until we arrived to Texas. Unfortunately he was going to a different city so I knew I was back to being bored.
When we got out of the bus I saw my dad waiting for us. I ran with excitement and hugged him like never before. It had been years since I had last seen him. We got into his truck and drove to Amarillo, Texas where we were going to live.
When we had finally arrived to our destination, I realized everything looked so much better in the US. The grass was greener, the weather was nice, there were fences that divided properties, the streets were cleaner and shinier, everything just seemed---so peaceful. It seemed like I was in heaven! My dad’s house was empty and small, but the backyard was big and pretty. It instantly became my favorite place. I have to admit that I was scared because I didn’t know English. English, is a really important language in this country because it’s their communication. Without communication you can’t get anything. I remember thinking I had to get used to it because I knew I would never learn English.
A few months later my mom told my sister and I that we were going to go school in one week. I was so shocked! I started to get goosebumps all over my body and started to panic. I’m a really nervous person so every time I do something special or go somewhere important, I get nervous. I asked my mom if my sister and I were going to go to the same school. She told me we weren't. I thought I was going to faint! This was the worse day in my life. I asked her why we weren’t going to the same school like we did in Mexico, and she said that in this country I was going to 3rd grade in an elementary school and my sister was going 6th grade in a middle school. Now I was more scared than ever. My cousins had told me that there wasn’t a teacher at school that knew Spanish so I knew I was screwed.
That week passed by so quickly. I couldn’t believe I was going to school now and at eight in the morning! The United States was so different than Mexico, but so far I like the U.S. better than Mexico. In Mexico we used to go to school at 1pm and we got out at 7pm, but in the U.S. we go to school at 8am and we get out at 3pm which was better (in my opinion) because we had more time to spend with our friends after school.
It was 7:55am already and I had to walk to school, but I was glad the school was right in front of our house. It didn’t even take on minute for me to get there. I kissed my mom goodbye and left to school. I had a feeling that things were going to go fine. The sky was cloudy and gray which always put me in a good mood no matter if I was steaming mad. Right when I was about to cross the street, this lady with a yellow and gray jacket stopped me. I didn’t know who she was or what she wanted, but she was holding a sign that said “STOP” (which I didn’t know what it meant at the time) and many kids were crossing the streets with her so I joined them and crossed the street. Maybe that’s what she wanted. Once I got inside the school, I started to get really nervous. I looked at my hands and watched as the white dots appeared. I didn’t know what they were, but they always appear when I get nervous--Every single one shaped differently. I didn’t know where to go since it was crowed and I didn’t remember where my classroom was so I went to the office to get help hoping that someone in there knew Spanish. Fortunately, there was someone. I read “Mrs. Montes” on her ID card that was hanging from her neck. I told her that I was looking for my classroom and she asked me which classroom I was going to and I told her that I was going to Mrs. Diaz’s classroom. What a coincidence, she was also going to that same classroom to help Mrs. Diaz!
