How About a Jumbo Co Op

Not wanting to stir the pot so to speak, but this thread started out fairly acrimoniously.

Why in the world would you want to create a quail with bantam chicken size? Why not just go with a bantam chicken?

The taste and cost of such a breed would quickly run into genetic issues in my opinion that would make the whole exercise a giant frustration. Jersey Giants were such an experiment in the chicken world and it was ok until the return on investment made the whole thing economically non-viable. I am not saying that you shouldn't try, just that the end goal is not really worth it.

I don't see where this thread started out acrimoniously at all, have you read all 32 pages of it ? This in my mind was the beginning of a fine line of large Jumbo Brown quail that some of us (including myself) still possess today. There happens to be quite a few folks around that are working with not only this line of birds but others as well to increase the size of the bird as well as egg size. And you know what, we like doing it & yes it is really worth it !

6 to 8 weeks versus 3 to 6+ months...

Im sorry the First post here got me laughing so hard i almost spit up coffee threw my nose .
I guess when i took genetics and have a few other genetisist friends i like to compare notes with
if you breed a Black Pig to a white pig you wont get grey. its not in the genetic you will get both black and white and some Crosses in between , now ive also raised Horses and you can breed a fast horse to a faster horse and come up with the Slowest horse in the world or Non at all since some stallions do not care who they diddle.

should i go on ? Genetics is an art if your looking for a certain thing in any animal you have to find it and work on it ... IT will not happen over night .
If you look at my avatar you will see 5 yrs of selective Breeding to build this look For a new line in the pixie bob Using a Black Stripped Grey cat and a Brown spotted tabby as my first crossing.

guess I just like looking at bigger quail, processing bigger quail and eating bigger quail eggs, yeh, makes the peeling worth it... in my mind

and thats pretty much why I started hatching the bigger eggs and growing out bigger birds

Does anyone have larger birds that is willing to sell chicks or eggs?

I'm very detailed oriented and have improved my meat rabbits PAST the industry standard of feed ratio and weight ratio. I'd like to do the same for my coturnix.
