How can I get chickens broody?!?

It's not something you can really influence. Some breeds are broodier than others, and some individual birds will be broodier than others. You typically need to wait for the days to get longer and the weather to warm up. Make sure the nests are clean, private, and comfortable. Add some fake eggs to encourage their "nest" mentality. Other than that, cross your fingers!

Can't make them be broody, but can set up a good area in case one does go broody. (Or two or three or...)

If you want broody hens, you'll want to pick a couple hens from breeds that are more likely to go broody.

Not all broodies are good broodies. Some will stop taking care of themselves, some are not good at caring for their eggs or chicks.

Oh and agreed that roosters don't make hens go broody.
And the absence of a rooster doesn't prevent broodiness.
