That's just sad. I would think seeing those poor caged hens in their gross, poopy environment, and knowing that food comes from them would make someone WANT eggs from happy chickens that are able to roam about. I have been pretty lucky. We raise cattle and hogs so my kids don't have any problem eating something that wasn't right from the store, and the same is true for the eggs (although we have barely started getting any-but the first 5 were scrambled and shared by all of us). But I could see them being picky if we had to eat one of our chickens.
