How can I train my dog not to chase my chickens?

MIne either, I am fortunate enough that there is enough space that they are 100% apart unless the dog is with me and goes into the chicken yard, then he is met with the coop and run. So they know each other, see but no touch.

The dog only weighs 12 pounds and I think the 15 hens would not put up with any nonsense from him. but like I said, no reason to find out.
I learned the hard way. Not with my current flock.

That’s awesome!!! Sounds fun. And you’ll get more in shape. 😉 walking is good for the humans too! LOL you could always get him a flirt pole too if you really can’t walk further and/or want to tire him out faster. Takes the same amount of time but way more exhausting LOL

And I just found the scene you’re talking about and that would never happen in real life because you train the dog well before you ever hook him up. Also you should never run him in a collar like that. They have special ones for pulling.

But you would teach them commands like directionals (gee for right, haw for left. Though you can use whatever you want), line out (to tighten the line because otherwise it could get tangled in the bike), and most importantly hike for go and whoa for stopping. Stopping being the key 😂 on by for going by distractions. There’s a lot to it.

But that’s for pulling in front. They do also sell attachments where the dog just trots alongside you instead of pulling you. And those I think you can just hook them up and go but I’m not sure. Probably a bit of training involved. You’d probably want to get the attachment but the pulling might get him more exercise. 😂🤣 but you would need equipment like the joring lines and harness and stuff.

The best attachments are Springer bike attachment and Walky Dog. They’re a little pricey but you don’t want a cheap one that would break with this sort of thing.

And you’re welcome on clearing it up hah
Today I took him out on another long walk with an occasional run. He wanted to go back home before I was ready to! When I got him home, he ploped onto the floor and took a nap. I'm beginning to think that he's kinda lazy... With the exercise that I do with him, it usually wears him out. He must of not got the husky energy?

I have a walking harness on him whenever I take him out. I have a new one that should be coming in the mail tomorrow. It's not as old as my harness, and it looks more comfy for him. Are you talking about a sled dog harness?

I have a hard enough time remembering what is left or right, so remembering the gee and haw will probably be a struggle. I'm already teaching him the whoa. When I take him out, there's this steep hill that we go down. I'm always nervous going down it with him because it's hard going down without a dog. I go down slowly, though he might want to go down quickly. Whenever I see him running out of leash, I stand my ground and say whoa pulling back a little. He's quickly learning that, and now sometimes he'll come to a complete stop and sit down and wait for me to catch up again before walking further. He appears to be a quick learner and loves to please. Also, when I start to run with him, I've been trying to say hike, so he learns that's when I'm looking to run. So far, he just runs when I do.

Ok! I had pet sitted him once before I owned him back in the winter. He pulled a lot back then, but now he only appears to pull when he wants to get to something. Especially if it's my neighbors dogs. He's trying to make friends with my next door neighbors dogs. Earlier, he kept howling because I wouldn't take him out so he could be with them.

Well, if he wasn’t exercised much before then he could have less endurance. They do lose that and it has to be built back up slowly. So he could get more energy the more fit he gets. 😁 OR. He could also just be calming down too. Dogs usually calm down around 2-3.

And sort of. Believe it or not there’s actually a lot of different “sled dog harnesses” hahah I assume you’re referring to the more commonly known one, an x back harness, though? But for joring you actually want a half back one that doesn’t go back as far since then angle is steeper and it doesn’t pull up as much this way. But I think any harness would work for the bike attachments and a collar might even work for those? Would have to read the instructions. But for pulling you’d need a harness but yours might be fine depending on the type. What kind is it?

I would recommend the Alpine Outfitters “Urban Trail” Harness, Howling Dog Alaska “Distance” Harness, or the ComfortFlex Sport Harness. I have the last two. Haven’t tried the Urban Trail yet but comes highly recommended by a lot of people. And also for the last one, the ComfortFlex collars are amazing too and I also have a lot of HDA stuff like their Second Skin harnesses plus the skijor pack so some lines, collar, leash, human harness lol anyway, they’re great.

But I’m sure yours is fine too. It’s just so they don’t pull on their neck.

And you can use left and right if you want! You don’t have to use fancy commands haha those are just what a lot of people use but you can use anything. I’m glad he’s learning whoa though! He seems smart!

I don't think that he was exercised that much before. So I've actually wondered if that is why. Sterling is 2.5 years old. Maybe it's a mixture of both?

Yeah, that's the harness that I was thinking of. He currently has a harness that is very similar to the Howling Dog one.

I like the looks of the first one that you mentioned. I almost think that my Mom just ordered him a new one off of Amazon, but seeing that first one, I think that I'll send her that one anyways to see if we can get it instead.

Ok. Yeah, he seems smart.

Awesome!!! I hope you can get it!!! I love that one and want one eventually too lol I have the Howling Dog one but would love the alpine one 😂🥰 I love the colors on the howling dog though haha I have the dark blue one and it’s so nice. Have some red stuff too.

Oh and I’m sure it’s a combination of being out of shape and the age lol

@TheDawg you appear to know a lot about dog harnesses. Do you know anything about dog packs? If so, I'd like to know your opinion on what would be a good pack for Sterling before ordering one. He's a Lab Husky mix who's 100-110 lbs. Because Huskies are a working animal, my Mom thinks that it'd be good if he could carry things like when we're on a hike or something.

I think a backpack is a great idea! Would give him a “job” to do in his mind (carrying something for you even if it’s empty lol) and physical exercise if/when you fill it. Not sure on what kind though. Maybe try RuffWear or Alpine Outfitters???
