how can u stop a rooster from crowing

Put him in a sound proof box at night and hope he doesn't develop the need to crow during the day. If he does or becomes mean and aggressive...you can have dinner on him. Sounds cruel, but it is true.

I LOVED my last roo and kept him in his "cock box" at night. He would crow his heart out and no one would hear him. Then he started to become REALLY aggressive. I stopped loving him the day he tried to peck out my eye. It took forever to get my eye to stop bleeding!

The box thing. The above post makes a good statement. "He would crow his heart out but no one could hear him." The box will need to be sound proof but traditionally the box is short (hieght wise) enough so that the rooster cannot extend his neck to crow, thus they can't crow.

sorry about that,
I just mean that i have too many roos in my coop right now (everybody's 6 months old and feeling their wild oats) and my poor girls are getting chased all day!
All I hear thoughout the day is the girls squawking because some boy has grabbed them by the head feathers and is trying to mount. Hence the culling.

Is the crowing bothering YOU or are you trying to keep your chickens undercover? If it's the latter, you need to rehome him and DO NOT buy straight run chicks because I promise you-you WILL get more roosters.

I had a good sized box that I sound proofed. You can use that egg crate stuff or some people have used straw bales around and on top if the box is kept outside. Whatever works. They can still extend their neck and crow, but no one can hear them because of the sound proofing.

MsBear & her husband invented something called a cock box. I have some from them. Its basically a box with airholes & a lid that is just short enough that the bird cannot extend his neck to crow. Ask her about it.

They work great! I just put them in when it gets dark & take them out around 8 or 9 in the morning.

I have 3 crowing rooster and I love it. We are out in the country so we can have all the chickens and roos we want. But honestly I really do like it.

Having had some experience in viewing copulating creatures here...

If a chicken is unresponsive or downright annoyed by a rooster's advances and he continually jumps on her or corners her and THEN jumps on her... what WOULD you call it?

(I certainly will not tell you some of the things dolphins do!)
