How do all you Northeners do it?

It's called a heted bucket for every animal outside and a woodstove for me! I do not mind the cold, the wind is what gets me. I was outside Sunday morning packing firewood around and it was -10 according to the thermometer with a thin sweatshirt on. Fed the chickens and made sure everyone had water in their buckets. Chickens have a nipple drinker that has a deicer in it. I only hate winter due to the snow around here and that is only because of having to drive in it! No heat lamps and no heaters. Just keep the wind to a minimum and they all huddle together when they sleep.

It was -25 in SW North Dakota last night -- going to be zero tonight. My coops are warm but not heated and my birds do OK. My horses won't come inside unless I MAKE them -- they would rather be outside in any weather. It was almost 40 here last week -- heat wave. When it's 40 here we work in shirt sleeves. I get hot above 75. I may not be able to take the cold when I get older, but I can't stand heat and humidity.

No idea how any of you extremists do it. HOT HOT or COLD COLD. I would DIE!

I don't mind not really having four seasons... temp swings of 10F day by day, highs in the 70's in the summer, lows in the 30's in the winter. Good luck prying me off the coastal side of the PNW!

I can feel you with the weather change it went from -58F to 48F between Sat and Sun a few weekends ago, thats over 100 degree differance.

We have a snow blower and a tractor.

We love our tractor. It is a thing of beauty. Sometimes we just stand there and admire it.

We have very tall piles of snow on either side of our driveway, sidewalks and buildings, all neatly moved by the above mentioned tools.

We have popcorn, and books, and a very worn out video of The Third Man.

That lasts about three days. Then we want to kill each other.

I lived in Leadville, Colorado as a kid and yes, it is so cold there that it snows in July. Then I moved to Tucson and It had the same problem, No seasons. I've camped out while winter mountaineering and also carried heavy packs through the desert in the hottest part of summer in Az and loved it. It is about learning to eat, dress and work right.

That and a nice dry pile of firewood by the woodstove.

I am really, really glad DH's office finally opened up. Waiting for the "I've arrived in one piece" phone call/text. School's still out though. I'm thankful the electricity has stayed on. I'll be doing housecleaning, vegetable garden planning and web surfing all day. And hourly checks on the chicken water. I like the snow - don't tell DH! Brings back memories - fond and otherwise - of growing up in snow country.

Brrrr..............That's colddddd!

As a teenager, I used to travel into Ontario (Quintet Lakes area). Sometimes it would be -40F in the winter. It was beautiful and lovely, though.
