How do I add more protein?

Gelatin must be fairly easy to digest, I'd guess. It is made from collagen, which is an animal protein. And, unless it's jello dessert, that should be about all that's in it other than water.

Maybe the thread on suet and this one on protein could be combined.

The idea of mixing a high protein seed with gelatin seems like it would be a good one.

ETA: I took a moment to look it up. Typing in "Gelatins, dry powder, unsweetened" to the USDA National Nutrient Database shows that it is 85% protein.

Gelatin is great idea. That's a very high percentage of protein. All I have is jello at home but I can go to the store tomorrow and get a few packets of the plain stuff. Thanks for the suggestion.

Use 1/4 oz (1 pack from a 1oz box of Knox Gelatine) to 4-5 oz of seeds mix. Dissolve the gelatine in 1/4 cup of water, stir in seeds, add a touch of honey if you like and then pack it into a mold.

This is great. I was just searching for a good way to give my girls a little extra protein for the winter and I think this will be perfect. Thank you Dawn.

I have never fed fishmeal but have been told it could effect the flavor of eggs. Anyone have any experience with that?

Why not soy or meat meal? Does blood meal work OK?

You are very welcome! It's been great for the molt having this information. And I really think they are fun to make, and I wanted also to give them all the time, so now I have different mixes for different purposes and make "powdered" donuts & cakes to fit the suet feeder.. for powder, I just dust some DE over them after they are ready to serve.

Fishmeal in excess of 10% of the total diet CAN but not WILL affect egg flavor. Soy is plant based, and chickens need animal protein (in my opinion), fish meal is easiest and really high in protein not to mention provides essential fatty acids which make eggs better for you (Omega 3) and the chickens benefit too. Blood meal or bone meal are suitable as far as I know, bone meal is used more often if your looking for just more protein. But Fishmeal adds more than the others, that is why it's my choice.

If you have a butcher nearby, you can sometimes get bandsaw dust... often dirt cheap or free.
