Years ago I read in New Scientist (a kind of "newspaper" for reporting short summaries of all the scientific journals etc.) about how citric acid (lemon juice) was very effective at killing things etc. and that infused kleenex (study) was effective at preventing colds in factory situations. No cold "cure" however very effective (lowering the ph) to prevent the (over)growth of the bacteria causing congestion > (no milk, no sugar as this will "feed" them) > . I take pure fresh lemon juice (do not dilute with anything nor add sugar!), a tablespoon or two at a time (place at back of throat and swallow as it will not be helpful coating your tongue and teeth!) keep taking it at the first sign of a throat tickle and then every couple of hours to keep the PH low and then do not drink any water for at least ten minutes (to give it time to "coat" the specific problem area which is not your stomach!) You really need to do this at the beginning (once congestion has set in it will less effective)
Since then I nor my kids have had congestion problems with a cold. I also had a dear older family friend who had emphysema and every year it seemed would come up with pnuemona or near pnuemonia with every cold. I convinced him to try it and he never had that problem again. Sounds very simple but in my experience it has worked for us.
ETA: Never had strep throat issues either.
