Not sure what type zip ties everyone else is talking about but I have used them numerous times and they have never broken. I always have to cut them off with wire cutters and I just cut off the ends when I affix them.

There was a lot of 6' welded wire fence installed on 4' posts when we bought this place. It wasn't completely folded over like a bed sheet on a clothesline, but most of it was folded over at 45 or 60 deg angle, more so if a coon tried to go over it. I often walked the fence line around the chicken pasture to push it back up into place until we replaced the fence and used the appropriate posts.

The white ones aren't UV resistant and after a season in the sun will turn so brittle that they will break under the slightest pressure. The black ones are UV resistant and will last outdoors, but at most places the wire t-post clips are included in the price of the t-posts. They generally count my bundles of t-posts and throw the appropriate amount of clips in the truck...

Oh, alright. Thank you.

What if you were to, instead of dowels, use treated 2x4's with the welded wire sandwiched between? Those dowels arn't so strong at 4ft, being made of aspen, but I'm sure they'd last the summer if you don't have dogs come visit. Also, my chickens have little trouble flying over my 5ft. cedar fence. Hog rings are great, bailing wire works pretty darn good too to fasten fence. Hope this is helping, if not disregard.

They do last a long time but they dont last forever. I used to put my aviarys together with them. Very heavy ten gauge wire. In the full sun without protection they are good for about two years at most. Even the UV stabilized ones. The way to tell? Choose one that you may thing suspect and give the wire a tug. The cable tie will shatter. Even if it looks completely intact. I slip a screwdriver inbetween and they usually pop off. If its an important location slip in a hog tie just to be safe.
