Hi, I have several broody ducks, They will collect eggs in a nest but they won’t sit on the nest. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get them to nest? Thank you.

Provide a spacious, comfortable, dark, safe nest, throwing some golf balls in the nest helps encourage broodiness too.

I have been using plastic eggs instead of golf balls. Most of them are already acting broody.

What breed of ducks? How many eggs have you let collect? My runner duck used to sit when she had about 8 in a nest.

I have a Production Rouen, silver Swedish, blue swedish, silver welsh harlequin, golden welsh harlequin and a pekin. I don’t know who is collecting eggs but their are 14 eggs in the nest tonight and four in another place in the house. Last year my Production Rouen sat on about 20-25 eggs and hatched about 12. Golden welsh harlequin sat on about 8 eggs and watched about 3 eggs.

How long have they been acting like this, they will build up there clutch for a few days or a week, and then start to sit.

Think about a month or so. A few weeks ago they collected some eggs and would sit on them off and on for Several days, they would keep them warm than let them get cold so I figured they weren’t any good anymore so got rid of those eggs. Now they have been collecting again for 4 days now and have 14 eggs in the nest.

Can you all offer any advice to me about nesting. Im allow a broody hen to sit on eggs for the first time. She will be one in June. She has been sitting for 10 days. She has 10 eggs she is sitting on. Not sure if this is normal but I have four females in all. They have joined in on the sitting on the best. So I have one female who sits all the time, one who sits very often and one who sits every once in a while. Then I have one who does not sit at all. However, I found her hidden in a bush far from the coop. Yesterday was the third day I seen her in that spot and the first day she laid an egg there. I let my ducks out at 6am daily and all eggs are laid by then. I let her out late yesterday at 7 am and she still laid the egg in that spot. I can hardly believe that is possibly.
Also they are still laying eggs daily on this nest. I don’t know what to do to stop their. The one day I touched the nest she abandon it for 24 hours. All I did was add a shade covering.
mall the ducks are Peking. I have the four females and one ma

questions...
Is it ok/normal for several ducks to sit on the same nest?
many advice to get them to not lay in this nest anymore?

Also in response to this post. I built them the nest they are using. I dug a hole and added some chips gumballs and pine shavings. They used it the next day. Maybe you could try that to promote sitting. I built a second nest yesterday hoping new kegs would be laid there.
