Congrats! My Australorp just started laying, her behaviors prior to laying were just like those of your SS.
The squatting & butt up in the air are presentation posturings...for the rooster's benefit. It doesn't seem to make any difference if there's no rooster around.
Love your SS, and am hoping to get some in the spring, beautiful birds.
