How do you raise humidity in lockdown? Can't get mine high enough

Ohhh, I misunderstood your previous post, now I get it!... .Hey AmyLynn, would you hesitate to candle a day 20 egg, if you weren't seeing any pips in the bunch?

:gig :lau

Would I hesitate? I candle right through the hatch so I know which ones are internally pipped!!! I told you, I'm really really hands on....lol

I just wanted to hear you say it!

Ok, so after dark, I'm going to candle a few and see what's going on in there...

ETA: Well, I have a bad feeling about this clutch. I didn't candle all of them, but I don't see much going on.

I really want Edd Sheppard birds. I'm not one for culling a bunch of valuable genetics to get a blue ribbon winner. I'm more into breed conservation, especially rare and difficult breeds... Edd values his bird's genetic diversity and he's done a great job of preserving their unique qualities.

Soooo, maybe I go to CA in April and meet Mr Sheppard ..... I might also like to have some Ann Charles birds...

I look for two things after lockdown. Any movement in the air cell or the membrane of the air cell and I look at the "back", the high side for movement from breathing. Sometimes it's hard to detect movement at hatch time if they are resting.

I realize I don't have the best light for candling, so maybe it's to blame some... but I didn't see any definite movement on the eggs I candled. The air sacs look ok, at least the ones I can see. Today is day 21 and still nothing.

There is one egg, I put a check mark on it at day 14, so I know it was alive......Towards the narrow end, it has a small red line. There appears to be something like a very light smear of blood leaking out from that red line. I candled it last night, but I couldn't tell anything. I gently ran my finger nail over the line to see if it's a crack, but I'm not sure if it's just something stuck on the outside of the shell. I don't think it can be anything other than blood... Another egg seems to have a very similar line, but no leakage.

Several times now I've put my cell phone up there and played some chicks chirping and chicken yard sounds

...

Well, yesterday I pulled the trigger and bought 6 ebay eggs from an Araucana breeder in PA. Don't know who it is, but we'll see if any of them hatch. I also bid again on some Gary Ramey eggs last night...

I should've cut a piece of screen or hardware cloth and made a guard for the back of it.... I thought it was high enough to keep chicks out, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.... It was so cheap compared to the "incubator fan kits" on ebay.... I paid $3 for it, versus $23 for the kit.... I had an old flashlight charger and just cut the end off, wired the plug to the fan and stick it in the wall!

Ya know, the first time you do anything, it's just a learning experience, so then you have to do it again and fix the things you missed the first go around!

Very true. You guys are way more talented than I. I don't dare attempt to make one of those
