How do you tell if a chicken is fat?

I'm wondering how I can tell if my chickens are fat. How do you do it?

What do you feed them?

Layer pellets mostly. They also have a little whole corn and scratch. They have oyster shell right now but I'm hoping to pick up a bag of grit at the feed store asap.
