How do you tell the males from the females? Now with pics. :)

OK! I tried the foam method. Only 1 out of 6 would do that. Is there a certain age that they have to be? Sorry for all the questions. I am a total newbie at quail. I hatched some out but then sold them.

So I am trying it again!!

Here are some pictures. Please let me know what you think. I have no clue about quail! It will not offend me if you tell me they are not tuxedo or coturnix. Let me know what they are.

I tried to get some good pics of them but they are not very co-operative.

Oh, they look pretty bad. These were the last quail, I think he said he brought around 200 or so. It might have been more. I think they are enjoying not having their backs and bums picked at.

looks like Brown and tuxedo coturnix ( tuxedo is just a color of coturnix ) But I'm not an expert on colors so maybe the tuxedo are actually another color? I do know in the third pic , the quail on the right is a male... on the brown ones you can tell the males as they will not have the spotted chest like that one has. Female are all spotted there.

If you can hold each one up and show its chest/breast area... monarch should be able to decipher type and possibly gender too depending on the color.

Well, if only one of the six would do it, then it sounds like you have one male and six hens. The one that foamed, was it by chance the brown with the golden chest in the 3rd picture? I agree that if you get a shot of each one held in your hand with chest out, we'll be better able to help you with color and sex. Where's Monarc, she who would be QUEEN of all things Coturnix?!

The colors you have are like nancy said browns and tuxedos (looks like 2 tuxedos and 3 browns?)

Anywho all three of your browns look to be roos
(atleast two of them are roos for sure the other i cant see it's chest well).
and you cannot tellthe sex of your tuxedos by just looking

I grabbed 4 different colored zip-ties yesterday from the shop but I am still trying to decide what kind of marking system I am going to have. I need to separate by age, sex and intended use (layer/breeding or meat).
I might be over thinking this thing too much

Great plan for colors. Consider using left for male, right for female. That way your colors can be used for same meaning/purpose on both sexes. Less to remember for you! We use something similar for our goat ear tags.
