Hello there! I've been using BYC basically everyday now, so here's another thread! 😆

So I'm planning on letting my quail (once they're fully mature) roam around my moms garden, but we need to figure out how high the fence needs to be. My friend knows how to clip quail wings, so we're planning on doing that. If a Coturnix quails wings are clipped, how high can they jump? I've heard they "popcorn" when they're startled, so does anyone know how high they can jump when they do that?

I would NOT put quail in a pen with no top. Even if they can't get out predators can get in! Even a rat can easily kill a poor quail.

ohh alright, thanks for telling me! I forgot to add that I'll be supervising them whenever we let them roam, but most of the time they'll be in a predator - safe hutch with a top.

Oh good! I'm not actually sure how high they can jump/flutter with their wings clipped but the highest one of mine jumped without flying was probably around 1 1/2 feet. Mine don't jump very often though so my advice probably isn't very useful.

Thanks for telling me even if your quail don't jump very much, I'll probably put netting or hardware cloth over the top though just in case a rat or something gets in while i'm watching them now that you've told me about that.

You'd definitely have to clip their wings. Iv had them do vertical take off on me up 8 or 9 feet when I had the pen open for cleaning. Had to chase the little beast down.
Wow that's crazy, I didn't realize they could fly that high! I'll definitely be clipping their wings. (My friend knows how to clip them so that they can still flutter and hop around but not fly.)
