How I went from egg hobby to obsession

Id keep the girls.. maybe have someone who knows HOW (properly) to process them help me with the males. We are considering getting quail.. my daughter is only 8, and shes like.. mommy, youre going to have to learn to cook them without crying 😂 it is funny that we haven't eaten as much meat since we got them.. wasn't intentional. Maybe because we have so many eggs!
Oh gosh that is cute!!! I think quail would be great. Small, contained, easy and delicious. We raised when I was a kid. I think quail and mallard were my favorite. I did not like rabbit or duck eggs. But actually, even as a kid I just never liked a lot of meat.
Yes, process and freeze would be good. By then you may forget their names and just be grateful for the better taste.
Why were you living on Oahu? What brought you there? Garden snails? Oh how about the banana slugs?!!

You know.. i never saw a banana slug.. but i did see centipedes!!! But not in my house.. but that's when i had to move because i said it out loud.. and you know what happens THEN! 🤣

I moved to Hawaii when I was 26, just because. I was living in Long Beach CA, and i guess from there it seemed like it wasn't SO far away.. I was doing IT work so I crossed my fingers that I'd be able to find work after my move... my last month of money, i got a job 🤣 but honestly, i worked too much, too hard, got to enjoy some, but not as much as i could have/should have. So its funny, because i got my priorities straight (not being all about work) and now i am not there to enjoy it!

I wanted to be in the country, so i was in Waianae.. really loved it over there, although everyone has told me its over developed now, which makes me really sad.

The home is good sized, but they are in this really oversized hallway.. i had them in the family room, but that was getting crowded. That is just a large bunny hutch, so it could really fit anywhere.

I have them inside because my HOA doesn't allow them outside, otherwise a setup under a tree would be fine.. lots of people have chickens out here. So long as there is a good shade tree for them, they seem to be ok. But i only have a few anyhow, not anymore work than having a rabbit or a couple of parrots really.

I added some thick plastic i cut up from a shower curtain as a skirt for the inside.. and we use a kitty litter scooper to scoop poops each morning and then dump the trays once a week. We timed it a few weeks ago and the cleanup is 10- 15 minutes (feels longer 😆).. so i clean them just before i vacuum the house. I also have a good air purifier at the other end of their coop to catch any dust. It works really well.

They go into one corner of their sleeping coop to lay eggs.. so funny too because they won't use any other corner. So same issue as a nest box, someone gets huffy and puffy if there is a corner hogger! 🤣
Oh my gosh, I missed this response earlier and the only reason I found it is because I am trying to avoid the B movie my DH is watching so I was rereading some of todays threads- way more fun than bears attacking and dramatic music- and found this.
Well, that is some hallway and I love how you all work together to make it happen. Super cute set up so Take that HOA!!! Yeah, I guess like parrots when they sing or scream at each other. Some times my chooks are so loud that it is embarrassing, i'd love to be able to shut a door on them.
Oh but wait, you vacuum every day lol :lau I dream of vacuuming everyday, that's it.

Chickens and centipedes are the best. Don't you just miss them?!
Yeah that sounds like a familiar story, most all my gal pals made it here after school and stayed. It is a good experience but a hard living sometimes. Well, the beach is free and so is much of what a body does to entertain themselves. It has changed a lot. Not as sweet as it used to be but that is life everywhere.

No, only vacuum once a week 🧹 we use the kitty scooper really quick each morning to sift the litter, that's all.

Not only do i rush over to tell them to keep it down, but now my malipoos have started howling like wolves when someone does an egg song!! 😬 BUT! I tested out using chicken TV.. omg it works! They actually watch@! So in my redesign, I'm going to have the chicken tv start around 630 and run for about 30 minutes, then play sitar music (they reallllly live that too) for another hour, and then they will be over the morning ruckus!

Oh, speaking of B movies.. have you ever watched Basketcase 1, 2, AND 3??? THE BEST!! I was just ***making*** my self laugh thinking of the Stepbrothers movie too.. oh no.. laughing again (you have to watch it!!)

Oh that gave me the heebie jeebies!! 😬

You know, with the working.. ugh, i grew up super poor, and so i was actually doing ok in hawaii, but i couldn't shake the feeling that i just had to keep working. I had a friend here tell me to get a grip 😆 and funny, i snapped out of it. I suppose i could go back, but I've really made my house my home here, and love my backyard garden.. oh and can't leave my chickens!! But I'm ok no matter where I'm at.. as long as I'm warm!!

Wow! That is awesome!!!
I am in Wake Forest, North Carolina. We say ‘Hey Y’all’ instead of Aloha.
Land here isn’t much easier to come by, we apparently have one of the hottest housing markets in the US. We got lucky bc our neighbor has a ton of land and is splitting some of it up because they are building a new house further back on their land and their horses are getting older.View attachment 2637173View attachment 2637174
I would love land like you have.. but no snow or natural disasters..(not sure if you have either, just my limitation 😂)

Oh.. and i recently saw a centipede here!! While out hiking... so i did some research, and they are also venomous, same size too! Oh.. and we have scorpions 🦂 😭

Yeah, I hear ya with the growing up poor. In Cali it is not such a good thing (where I am originally from too) I sailed to Hawaii after 10 months in Mexico when I was 15. I did not like Hawaii much and almost jumped on a boat and sailed back a few times, wanted to go back to Mexico  but I stuck it out and now 42 years later I know I don't fit in anywhere else cept maybe NC with Tracy and her farm stand! I know I could not leave my slew of animal/children and would go broke shipping them all anywhere. I DO want to move to the Big Island were we have a few acres. Maybe one day...
