How is your flock today?

Congrats. :) How long after lock down should it normally take for them all to hatch? Then do you keep them all in the incubator until they are all done hatching or do you pull them out as soon as they are all dried off?

It depends, on the situation of when I pull them out. No more egg's have hatched. I may just end up with the 2 chick's this time. Maybe my incubator is getting wore out and I'll have to buy a different one?

Do you do any egg necropsy to see what might have happened?

There is a story behind May's name.

BYC member Azygous posted a long thread about one of her Blue Australorp pullets going lame. There was a lot of very informative discussion about what might be the issue, treatment, concerns, etc. This thread is 40some pages, and the conversation was several months long. She got mostly better, had some really good days, then relapsed and passed. She was a beautiful girl named May.

My May is a way of honoring her struggles, her memory, and what she offered all of us: information about helping our feathered friends.

That was sweet of you do do that! When I was working with the Black/Blue/Splash Australorp's before, my favorite hen was the splash named Precious.

No, I just wait long enough (3 extra day's past the due date) and then throw away any that didn't hatch. It's probably the incubator. I have done hatches in it for 6 years. Maybe it's time for me to upgrade and get a new one. I've been saving up to do that.

Glad to hear Ruby is doing much better, she is so lucky to have you caring for her. :)

O-wow since ten that is awesome, maybe not if you have a lot of hooves to trim. LOL I am just learning and the link below is the pictures and information I go by. Betty, Scooters mom has really bad hoof issues because the original owners must not have cared for them. So now I been trying to get them back into shape little by little.

She is just now starting to clam down to where we can work with her, but her hooves are so hard to trim and file on. I have a good brand name of shear and file, but I think a small grinder with a sanding disk would be so much nicer and quicker. Just not sure how she would react to the noise?

Do you have any hoof trimming secrets or tips?

Thank you!! Oh yeah I've heard of one called I think hoof boss that folks use. I've heard they're not good for beginners but I haven't used them so can't really personally comment on them. I also don't know what Betty or Scooter are lol like if you're talking about horses, goats, sheep etc.

I don't know that I have any secrets necessarily honestly. I do know that when I'm halter training I teach them to be used to me touching and picking up their feet at the same time which is helpful I think. I saw a really good video recently too, I'll link it. I don't really think there's any secrets necessarily to be honest. I will say one think though you do not need fancy trimmers, I've used the same ones this whole time, just the regular green handles cheap ones from tractor supply. I just use one of those scissor sharpeners when needed. I'll link that too actually.

Once you've done it awhile it's pretty simple. Just try to stop once you see pink, take off small bits at a time especially when starting out. If you hit blood do not panic, put some blood stopping powder or whatever on it and continue. They may limp for a day or two, but mine always have been fine after. Try to make them as level as you can, but don't stress too much it's not a pedicure lol. They're livestock. I mean you want them pretty good so they're comfortable and joints aren't needlessly stressed of course. If you have one like yours where they were really neglected it can take a long time of cutting bits off at a time to be good again so be patient. Good luck.
