How is your flock today?

I’ve got nineteen chooks at the current moment! 6 buff Orpingtons, a dark Brahma hen, 5 Easter Eggers, 5 gold laced polish, one Wellie hen, and of course, my Wellie rooster. They get let out to the run every morning, so they know the time I come to let them out, as soon as I walk to the hen house door I hear gritching chickens right at the door waiting! They are so smart :love

Welcome RDchicken99 I so have to agree with you, they know for sure when their feeding time is each day and if a person is a little late...... They have no trouble with squawking loudly to get your attention! :gig

Oh my goodness you all are up and at 'em early. So much going on and to respond to.

First :frow @RDchicken99

Congrats on the interview @BlueBaby AND hatch day AND the last of the rehoming! It's like Lucky Friday for you!!! Quick! Play the lotto!!!!

Bravo on the Polio intervention. @416bigbore I just learned a few things I never knew... I guess if they eat EVERYTHING chances are higher for parasites :idunno. Lucky you were able to get a scope on cl, I myself looked and looked but our cl is pretty limited. I asked our biologist friend to help me pick a scope and she gave me her contractors catalog thinking it is a good place for a good price... lol... maybe for her... cheapest one was in the high 3's and too much for an amateur like me looking for bugs in poop. We also have horse's dog and cats, I also plan to do floats for chicken friends and make it all worth while. My friend has been kind enough to show me the ropes when my gear arrives.

On the broody @BrooksHatlen I agree w/ Blue. Get her secured in her own spot. It will pay off big. Towards the end of her sitting she will start looking a little worked and you will be able to give her food and vitamins and water without her getting rushed by the others- throwing her off the nest (depending on status) fights, mixed up eggs and sitting longer than needed... safe chicks- it is just a big pay off to isolate her with some room. If you plan on letting your girls hatch every once in awhile you should def arrange a space for her to be a broody safely. PLUS it is so much more fun and worry free. Congratulations BTW!!!!

K. Gotta make DH breakfast, grab cabin keys and laundry from friends ad do the rounds... that is code for scraping poop. :p

BYC Forum is a 24 hour source of information and entertainment. I have yet to log on at any hour of the day and not find something that isn't currently going on. :ya :yesss:

I just had a large breakfast/lunch combo meal and had fresh chicken eggs, bacon and toast. I was curious to check Chewy's girls eggs to see if they are fertile or not as I was cracking them open. I have never checked before and this is what I seen on two of them.

I can see the Bullseye on the one yoke, ( F Egg 02 pic ) but is the other egg fertile or not?

I have read that some eggs might not be fertile if a Rooster has his favorite girls out of the flock. So out of my 22 eggs, I am guessing a third might not be fertile if this is the case? Chewy is only 8 months old.

Both look to be fertile but just at different stages. One was most likely layed before the other, or sat a bit longer under the hen before she got off the nest?

Yeah sorry caught that but I did not have time to correct, had to dart off b4 I could correct... OR... I am just checking to see if you all are paying attention or actually read my posts lol :lau
The folks who returned the keys to the cabin along with the dirty sheets and towels had a list of items that they managed to break in under 48 hours. I lent the cabin for my cute and sweet friend who is off to Duke University on full scholarship in a few days but the auntie who took her was too much. So NEVER again... just too much. Deep sigh***

K. giving up on last egg in the bator and cleaning it out and pondering another batch. Think I can let my broody out of jail :ya

@416bigbore I do hatch more than the average person but don't cull my roos who are (50%) part of the deal. So that definitely effects how many hatches I should responsibly do. If I slow my hatches down I tend to be able to find my boys some REALLY good homes.

Does anyone know or have experience with or about the higher heat and better hen ratio for hatching? Curious. 🤔🌴
