how is your home decorated?

My son drew up our house plans when he was 14 and we built the house when he was 16 ( he is currently a second year architecture student at UT/Knox. ) House is shaped like a cross, 4 different wings, all huge glass windows and brick outer construction. I guess the house is decorated more modern theme with leather furniture, hardwood floors and natural stone, (no carpet except for what is on the steps going down to our finished basement). I have some beautiful antique pieces of furniture in some of the rooms and very old stained glass windows from Great Britain make up my transome window on the front as well as accent pieces built into the wall in the dining room and kitchen. Of course, my son decorated his room with 2Danes furniture, everything ultra modern in his room. But, I don't have time to waste cleaning it because I would much rather be outside taking care of my chickens, so I guess you could say this house on the hill gathers quite a bit of dust, and I am not at all apologetic!

Hmm...I don't know what I would call ours. We have large pictures throughout the living room and dining room. One is the Ten Indian Commandments, two are oil paintings that were given to us (one is a headdress and the other is a feather piece that one would wear on an outfit. Both have real metal garnishes and real feathers with the oil painting. GORGOEUS!), one is a large picture above our rock fireplace of the bear dance, a landscape oil painting that DHs mom painted and an oil painting of an owl that my great-grandmother painted. Most all our furniture is light oak and our floor is bamboo wood flooring except kitchen and bathrooms, which is tile. The walls are a light tan with accent walls in golden tan, lighter terracotta and a light earthy green. Basically earth tones throughout the house. Our couch is a tan microsuede covered by a light beige slip cover. We have added accent pillows of dark earthy green and a smaller one of green, terra cotta, tan, and burnt orange with a native american-like pattern. We like native american decor (front bathroom is Kokopelli) while the master bath is nature with images of moose, bears, etc. We like rustic too, but live in a large-lot development in a stucco house, so it's not so rustic.

Maybe our style is earthy? (That matches the the dog/cat hair and dust too!)

Lifetime eclectic, I suppose. I never think of "decorating." Our home just grows and develops, as pieces are added (for example from country antique sales) and taken away (sent off with children leaving home). Most storage pieces are country antique sale finds, like pie safes, cupboards, tables, wooden chairs, nothing too fine or dear to use with children and grands, nothing matching--though all blends. Utility pieces such as sturdy tall book shelf units and media storage have been store buys. Books, quilts, some old framed prints and family photo gallery round us out. I swore against all carpet when we sold our town home and moved to our small acreage, so our floors are practical and easily cleanable tile and hardwood. We have downsized from too much and too large and seem to be just about right, right now. ~G

I think we live in the same house--minus the porcelain. My decorations are plants (decorations for me, midnight cat food for Munchkin) and antiques.

Yep. We live in an art house, my husband and I are both artists. So, we've collected some through trades, bought a bit and made a lot. Our house is from the 70's with lots of wood paneling and lots of stonework (original owner was the owner of a quarry). But, we've painted nice bright colors everywhere, and put some humorous touches all over.

Behind the swing is a big stone fireplace. The coffee table was a goodwill find that I mosaic'd on.

Love the swing! I brought my swing (with frame) in the house the first winter i had it. Friends teased me, "you know you're a redneck when" but EVERYONE wanted to sit in it! I got quite comfy laying down and swinging in front of the tv. I miss it!

Decorated in classy yard sale finds. Everyone that comes over says "where did you get that"? And I tell them "at a yard sale". We have just built a beautiful room on, and it is a fantastic brick color. Husby said for me to go to Penny's or wherever and get some curtains and a beadspread, dust ruffle set. I told him no, I didn't want to give that much for those items, I would wait and get them at yard sales this spring and summer. It's not just the find, it's the find at a really cheaper price, and finding just the right thing. Or two!

Mine is country all the way, with chicken's and rooster's everywhere. You know you are going to get atleast 3 every Christmas.

Does anyone else think that is a "woman" question?

Well I guess this is mostly a woman's forum.

My wife does a great job, but mostly its for functionality at this time cuz we have so many kids and kids friends over ALL the time.

My DH loves to talk about our design choices. He's weird though.
He doesn't like to watch the design shows with me but he loves being involved in the design of our own home. Our tastes are pretty similar but I've been told by a few folks that my tastes are a little on the masculine side. I don't think that's true. I know a few women who don't like pink or ruffles or flowery crud either. I just like clean lines and can't stand foo fooey stuff.

Hubby's the same. It works well for us.
