How jumbo is a "jumbo" coturnix?

Like I Said... You'll Fit Right In

I do selective breeding also but have yet to hit that 16 oz. mark (usually more like 11-12 oz.). I haven't really checked this out with mine, but had a guy tell me that as he increased the size of his quail the fertility seemed to drop off. Anyone else noticed this happening with theirs? My A & M's do seem to lay a lot more consistantly than my browns.

I dont know JJ, the man is as homely as I am and it sounds like he may have a sense of humor to boot. Looks like a rough row to hoe for the poor fella...

Sorry to hear you dont have high hopes for your hatch. I have never owned a store bought styrobator. Some seem to love them and some not so much. The hovas seem to have a bigger following than the little giants, but you never know till you own one or the other. I use a brinsea eco 20 and a home made coolerbator for hatching and get along well with them. I love the brinsea for the money. Good luck with your birds Jessa, Bill

Yes "antics" Bill...

Okay..perhaps that's not the right word...

Does" shenanigans" suit you better ? You know what..I actually had to GOOGLE it for the spelling...ha! so we're sticking with "shenanigans!!"

Thank you for your kind words. Day 19 today. A little teensy tiny bit of hope left. The whole incubator thing has been an experience so far. We built one...didn't work out so well. Then we saw this Little Giant at TSC, on sale for 35.00, which is incredibly cheap, so we grabbed it. Definitely can't afford anything else for now... so I am going to have to figure out how to run this thing properly. When I finally have a good hatch, not only will I have the satisfaction of a bunch of new babies...but I get to tell a Styrofoam, inanimate object..that "I WON! HA! " ...and face it..that's always fun

I think the biggest thing you can do to have a successful hatch in a foam low-end incubator is to build a big outer foam box around it - something that has about 18" of air space around on all sides, with just a little ventilation. This will create a buffer between the fluctuating outside temperatures and the foam incubator. All you really need is a few sheets of foam insulation, some duct tape, and a good sharp knife to cut it.
