How jumbo is a "jumbo" coturnix?

It's ok. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I don't mind the jokes , but I find that making up stupid exotic names for a tiny, generally brown bird for the sake of selling them is annoying. Also, I find that shameless self promotion in an attempt to sell stuff on these threads annoys me, especially since there is a specific section on BYC just to sell stuff. It's easy to stop the trash talkin', all someone has to do is produce a line of cortunix quail that consistantly produces 16-18 plus, ounce birds (that we constantly hear about) without enhanced feeding, lighting, 2 years, or other tactics, and the skeptics will be silenced. The problem is, that universities with unlimited funding tried it and failed. I'm not so sure that a backyard breeder with a ton of eggs to sell is gonna pull it off.

The question was answered, some people just want to have fun I guess. The topic has been discussed and most find it funny/disturbing that people claim to have 18 ounce birds. Why not joke about it? The op got an answer, what are the jokes hurting?

It's funny how people who say they have birds that big probably don't own a scale...

Maybe its the hot weather make'in folks testy...Maybe some of us are just A-HOLES and should'nt be allowed to speak around the more edumacated folks. But just maybe, some of us need to lighten up, pull the undies out of our crack and fill the void with a sense of humor... And thats all I have to say bout that..... Bill

Just another hobby to me. If you set no goals how do know if you are making any progress?

I'm right there with ya, I hope my birds get bigger with every hatch. Selective breeding and hard culling are the key I believe. Edith,(Buttercup) told me to pick the breeders early on by the heaviest birds, and thats what I plan on doing till they either get huge or bust. She gave several of us nice large birds to start with and I think they will get bigger. How big is up for debate.... but I'll try anyway. A lot of folks have worked them selves up into a good mad about the topic, every time it comes up, and there is no need. BTW, if we were talk'in bout beer, cars, rifles,or religion, chances are at some point, I'm gonna poke somebody in the eye about it. All in fun but sometimes a sense of humor gets in the way. Bill

***AS A GENERAL SERVICE ANOUNCEMENT***

DONT TAKE OR SARCASM AND SKEPTICISM TO HEART... EVERY LAST 1 OF US WISHES ANYONE BREEDING FOR WHOPPERS A WONDERFUL SUCESS. SERIOUSLY WE ALL WANT THE MAJIC SECRET TO SIZE RESTRICTION UNLOCKED AND MOST OF US STRIVE FOR IT OURSELVES. ITS JUST THAT MANY OF US HAVE BEATEN THAT HORSE TO DEATH WITH LIL OR NO SUCESS... THUS THE SARCASM. NO ONE NEEDS TO WEAR THEIR HEART ON THEIR SLEEVE ABOUT IT--- ALL FUNNING ASIDE WE ALL WANT SIMILAR RESULTS, ITS JUST THAT SOME OF US HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT AND USE OR SENSE OF HUMOR TO COMPENSATE FOR THE EMPTY RESULTS

Sorry maybe that was a turkey but now that you mention it , where did that anvil go?

On a more serious note : I have done some of the selective breeding over the years and come up with a few quail that weighed 12-13 oz. Yes I do have an accurate scale.
If someone comes up with 16-18 ouncers let me know cause I want some and will pay top dollar for some fertile eggs.

Bill
