How long does hatching process take?

I'm so sorry to hear about your babies! :( On the other hand, now is your opportunity to get a good reliable incubator. I got this one... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00303XAHO/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a bit pricey, but it does EVERYTHING for you. Keeps the heat steady, turns them and has an automatic water pump! You set the % for humidity and it keeps it there!!

Hubby should get this for you!
I have been debating back and forth between the Octagon and the Mini Advance actually. Thanks for the recommendation!

and to answer your question on the other forum, YES, 86 IS WAY TO HIGH.  that could be why they are delayed ON top of your temp being to low..  understand they have to absorb all that moisture, then the yolk then the veins.  If you have your humidity at 86, that's a LOT of moisture they have to get rid of first before they can even THINK about absorbing.

When it's high like that, it makes the membrane, THERE membrane because they have TWO membranes they have to break past.  But it makes there membrane kind of like a Rubber ball.  or  Rubber band.  They can't do it and will usually give up.  So it's best to keep that humidity down so that it doesn't cause that membrane to get Rubbery... If it does, they will push and push and push and never be able to break it.

So that's why I said lower that humidity..

GOOD TO SEE YOU HAVE A STINKER THAT HAS BROKEN THREW HIS MEMBRANE.  Now lets cross our fingers for the others..

Is a tiny bit of assisted hatching wise? They're really strong and doing GREAT despite my stupid mistake, but i feel like its necessary since they're breaking the shell and not even denting the membrane.

Thanks, I will try that. I did one last night with a pin in the one that had internally pipped. I couldn't smell anything but I didn't feel any movement. I will put holes in the ones that have dipped. There were two that hadn't dipped, should I leave them alone?
well remember dipping is what they do three days before hatching, so give them those 3 days if nothing then make those safe holes. Not as soon as they dip..

If it's a call, yes you have to assist most of the time..anything else I wouldn't think it's necessary

The humidity is down to 65 now and the temp has been good for two days. I think they just couldn't take being at 108 and died. I really haven't seen any movement and the veins look duller than they used to if that makes sense.

You may want to crack one opened, just peal back on the air cell wet the membrane and see if there's movements, if there is SEND ME A PIC right away, I'll help you to help him out safely..

Mine are my pets, like a dog or a cat...we are not a farm, just a nice suburban area...I am their primary caregiver... Why shouldn't I want them to "love" me and imprint on me? The closer we are the better I can protect them from dangers! If they come to me when called and let me handle them, then when they're in a jam I can respond much faster than trying to chase them in circles . The first two ( mom
And dad of eggs)respond when called and listen better than the other 4, that's because they bonded as a flock ( which is ok) I'm not trying to separate or segregate from the flock, I was merely trying to find a way to get them to recognize me as a nurturer and a non feathered mother.... No selfishness, or malice intended.

In that case, what you should do is greet them with treats, hold treats in your hand to make them come to you, not you go to them. Get the parents to come to you and shell bring the kids with her. That's one way of doing it, but I wouldn't disturb her while she's in her nesting box taken care of them..

Well, I opened a bit of the pin hole up and couldn't smell anything, but there was no movement. I could see the bill so I gently poked it. Dead. I opened them all up and saw that they were fully formed an a few more than I thought had internally pipped. They were within hours of hatching when they died. I am just heart sick. My sweet neighbor lent me the incubator and it was a bit of an old one. I guess I just figured it would all be fine. My darling husband has been trying to comfort me. He told me that he wanted to get me my own incubator for Mother's Day and that I could pick the perfect one that wouldn't malfunction (such a cutie pie). I feel so bad about my fuzzy babies.

Awee so sorry, it had to be when the temp jumped sooo high. Dang it, well that's out of your control I mean unless your sitting there watching 24|7 it would have been the only way to have stopped that.

Dang it poor little guys, but here's the bright side of things. YOU ARE MORE EXPERIENCED AT THIS AND NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO. your next hatching will be the best ever. Wooo hooo come on get those babies going...

Ok can you clarify for me this? You said they are breaking the shell and not the membrane?? That's impossible, the membrane is on the inside, they have to go through that before they can even get close to that shell??

One thing I like about the Brinsea is they have an alarm for the temp. I would wake up out of a dead sleep and run to their rescue if I could hear a buzzer!! Thank you so much for your help during the past couple of days. They have been really stressful for me and you really helped me feel much better. I did do my best and I have learned that you can never take the whole hatching process for granted. I've thought about Holderreads- just ordering my ducklings. Do you have any experience with them? No one in my state raises SA ducks so I have to have either eggs or ducklings shipped to me if I want this breed. Have you heard anything good or bad about them?
