How long from pip to hatch?

Just got my first pip!
And, of course, I have to run out the door for Mothers' Day dinner!
Will I come home in a couple hours to a baby chick,
or will it take longer than that?

What kind of eggs have you got? I'm on my first hatch of silkie dominique brahma cochin frizzle BO mix eggs. I went to the in-laws and came back to find a chick. The pip and the whole hatch happened in under 2 hours. My mom checked the eggs at 1 or so. I went to check at 3 and there was a silkie chick just cheeping away walkin around in the incubator. I have 4 other pips. Mine are early I'm on day 19. The one that is out looks great though! Good luck to you. It could take minutes to hours...it just depends. Each chick is different. Let me know how it goes!

It can take up to 24 to 36 hours from a pipping to a zip...Patience!!

Well, I came home to a slightly bigger hole in the shell.
And a lot of chirping!
But still no chick.
I feel like an expectant father.

Going away for a few hours is no big deal and you shouldn't fret over it.
I've gone across town with pips in the bator, only to get a call while gone that most had already hatched. That is desirable. Fast breakouts are a sign of careful breeding and healthy vigor.

When a hatch or individual chick takes longer than 24 hours - that isn't so good. It means either your incubating methods were at fault or the parent stock may not have been "up to snuff."

Honestly, the chicks don't need you around to hatch. If they're from strong and vigorous stock, they'll do it on their own.

I now have 6 big pips and 1 chick. I am not leaving the incubator for anything. I have pillows and blankets here and everything. LOL. Are you gonna stay up and stare at your pip or go to bed?

I keep going down to the coop to check.
Broody chicken gets annoyed with me, so I'm trying to limit my visits.
Very little progress so far.
