How long until your overwhelmed or tired of poultry

Voted "how could you ever get tired of poultry" because it was the closest fit for me.

My birds are neither a hobby nor pets, but the means to accomplish an end. The eggs produced will be used as "currency" for trade and barter, plus, for eating. After keeping what we need and sharing with the family we will trade or barter the rest for products and services with our local neighbors. The eggs are just another form of asset we will add to our "trading account".

Before anyone screams .... our birds are getting quality care and treatment since we expect to receive a quality product from them. With only ten birds at the moment, daily care chores aren't a problem. Besides, top quality eggs are worth more than substandard ones.

I voted "over 10 years" because I want to have chickens for a long time. I know I might get tired of them, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I don't have plans to get any other poultry. Ducks are too messy, turkeys are too big. I like my little flock of 1 roo, 3 hens, and 3 pullets. I can see getting/hatching 3 chicks next spring. A flock of 8-10 would be just right for us.

I've been keeping chickens for 5 years. I've had my ups and downs, but I love them, and I couldn't imagine being without them.
I'll be moving to a farm within the next year or so, and I plan on getting ducks and guineas too.
I don't see myself ever growing tired of owing poultry.

Did not have chickens my working years no time.
We chose to retire where we are. Can have as many chickens as long as I can go clean daily 3 coops 1 for banty.

I told someone at work 2 weeks ago I can't take the stress from injuries, mites, etc. and always worrying about them, cleaning up and mopping every day, and nightly dreams of them getting hurt, and once they all die I am done with chicken s!!!

I now have one week old chicks in my bathtub. it is a lot of work and I am t he one who does all of the work with a full time job, and I don't sit down to relax for the day until they are closed up for the night. I curse a lot in the morning wishing my mornings were less busy and my days after work were more relaxing.

but then I see them do something funny or cute, or I hear the sounds they make when they are eating their favorite treat, or when I think one might be in danger, or when I have to keep my rooster in the garage due to an injury and I see him look up at me when I tell him I love my little jerk and he will get better, and I feel he actually understands.

long story short, chickens are the best thing that have ever happened to me. I may hate the stress and chores, but they make me happy. I am an animal person, so honestly any animal would make me happy, but I honestly never thought I would get so emotionally attached to them.

This is a super interesting poll, but obviously the results are going to be SUPER skewed towards people that are still keeping chickens. I'd guess that 99% of those who decided chicken raising isn't for them aren't going to be hanging out on BYC to even see this poll

Kinda like going into a Chipotle restaurant and asking people "How many of you like burritos?"

Last night I hung out with my flock during the "roost time rumble". I have several ornery cockerels causing chaos and FIVE broody biddies that I need to deal with. As they all settled in and quieted down, I felt so full of love for my crazy adorable little flock. There are days I feel like, "oh my gosh I do not feel like refilling all of this water." I definitely wish my broodies would give me a break for once, and I'm not pumped about processing day for the cockerels, but I wouldn't give it up! I love my little flock <3

I like your poll. I had chickens in the 80's for about 5 years, then we moved and did not have a place to keep chickens. I am a life-long bird addict, I have kept parrots since I moved out at 18 years old, 1977. I love having a flock of chickens again! I like to sit in the yard with the birds, and just watch them. I think it is worth the work to keep them, even if food prices are up, they are good company and birds never judge us!
