How many boxes?

We have 3 boxes for 6 girls. Could add 6 more girls and still have enough room. They definitely tend to lay in a box that already has an egg in it. I was nervous last year when I was in the planning mode for our coop. I was originally planning 6 boxes. Did lots of research on this site and settled with 3 boxes for our 6 hens.Which is more than adequate. Even with the chicken multiplication that seems to happen.

I think the 1:4 ratio is good but as so many others have stated, they will lay where they want to lay. If they are anything like my chickens, they will lay in the attic in the dog house and you don't find the eggs for MONTHS when the waiting line to get in the attic is now drawing attention to the chicken owner - - - > ME and she goes over to see what the fuss is all about and she finds 35 eggs in a hidden nest and wonders why because they have about 30 nesting boxes to lay eggs in. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So now the chicken owner - - - - -> ME has to move nesting boxes (small pet carriers)in the dog house so they can lay in the carriers and NOT in the attic. :he
