How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

So far today

1 ginormous egg from the little red hen.....it had blood on it and is the biggest egg for me AND I cannot find my scale!! I mean how do you lose a scale? Is blood normal? I have not seen this before in all my four months of experience...lol

1 tiny egg again.....I don't think the Phoenix would have laid again this soon...not sure....but maybe the partridge rock? She is the right age....maybe they were both hers. Or maybe the Phoenix will lay more often than I expect?

And I still have two very LARGE Doms who should begin laying any time now.....how did they grow so large?

I'm still consistently getting 9 eggs out of 10 chickens. :) I get 10 out of 10 pretty often but don't really count on it.

I write the date on my eggs to to keep track and so that the people that buy them can see how fresh they are
R
I do the same thing...I write the date I gather them in pencil on each egg...and for the same reason. I tried sticking file folder labels on the carton, but since each carton had eggs from different days in it that got stupid real quick. I ain't the brightest crayon in the box. So I went to marking each egg. Folks who get eggs from me seem to appreciate it. I don't have a roo, so none of mine are being saved for broodies, but it's still nice to know.

Thanks, well I use pencil and right now, I am just tracking by date for food reasons. We also don't rinse our eggs, but give everyone a tip sheet about eggs, little tips and facts about chickens and eggs. Also gives them proper storing methods for farm fresh eggs and proper washing instructions.
We will be hatching in the spring so those eggs will be set aside. Will hopefully be incubating and letting some broodies sit on a clutch. I have some leading brooding candidates already, I negotate with them everyday when I remove them off the nests, that in the spring I will let them sit.

Hope the get it soon!

Haha....Victoria started squawking earlier. I went outside and moved broody Jessica off the nest. Victoria jumped in laid her egg and jumped back out. I m sure Jessica is back on her golf balls now. Sassy will lay beside her but everyone wont do that.

Rob, Blooie and Cochix~what is the oldest that you will sell to a customer? Will your customers accept them if they are a week or more old?
Cochix , great idea to provide egg handling instructions!! I had one customer who complained that the egg yolks would break the minute they hit the frying pan. through questioning I discovered that they were storing the eggs at room temp after I had stored them refrigerated. A drastic change in temp breaks down the yolk membrane causing it to be weak. Pus, I rinse the eggs which means bacteria can grow if not refrigerated!!! Thankfully they never got sick, but I had to educate them. Every time they get eggs from me I quip "remember to put them in the fridge immediately"....LoL. They have not had a weak yolk problem since.......

Blooie, I was going to try the file folder labels too....LOL...I guess I won't now! Do you rinse your eggs, then write on them in pencil without any problems?

Cochix, who is your number one broodie candidate? I have a black Orp who is the best broodie mama ever, sure she will take your finger off, but she is loyal to the eggs and chicks from the moment she sits on the eggs up until the chicks are 8 weeks old. I can actually keep the chicks and her with the flock because no chicken will dare mess with her kids....she would rip their heads off! Which means she not only hatches them and raises them, she also integrates them into the flock. I love that hard working mama!

It sounds like pencil works well and does no harm then. Thanks everyone!!

My customers buy the eggs as fast as the girls can lay them but yes I think they will buy them if they are a week or more old
