How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Hi chicken friends, when hens learn to lay in nest boxes do you remove fake eggs?
good question! Our 1St egg was when i didnt have the fake ones but i wanted to be safe than sorry. Personally, I keep my fake eggs in several nesting boxes and took out the rest. I guess just for reinforcements lol. They are just starting to lay and I've only had one ever lay on the coop floor. Mine sure do move around their box choices.

I didn't start with fake eggs but my first hen had been a stray for a while and would only nest in the ground. Between 2 golf balls and messing up her ground nest everyday she eventually got the hint. As we got more pullets and they started laying I put 1 golf ball in each box. It sort of helped them spread out a little but eventually they all choose to prefer 1 or 2 of the 4 boxes. Finally I ended up taking to golf balls out. I had 2 girls that love to go broody and 1 would some how even move all the golf balls to a single nest so she could sit on those when I took the eggs. I do think there is a slim chance fake eggs may increase the likelihood of a broody hen. I know it's mostly hormones, but seeing an egg always there... well it's like when new wives start seeing all their friends having babies. Even if it's not in the plan it just sort of getting you wishing and I think to some extent chickens will do the same. If they see eggs just sitting over a long enough time they may be more inclined to want to sit.

I still have ceramic eggs in the nests almost 3 years later, but I have four generations of layers added every year. Sometimes they kick it out but most of the time they lay eggs where I put the fake eggs, So they use all 12 nesting boxes when I move dummy eggs.

8 eggs today.
My Mom's back in the ER. So, now I have both parents in the hospital. 1 in ICU and the other waiting in ER for an ICU room to open.

That sucks. Sorry to hear your Mom's back there.
