How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

We're very soggy here, one atmospheric river after another, but the temperatures are very mild (50s-40s) compared to the harsh conditions so many of you are dealing with! Poor girls, the wood chip-covered ground in their outer run is saturated, muddy where they still insist on excavating craters, and they're tracking mud & moisture into the covered run at their doorway.:he

They seem unbothered, thank goodness, just take cover while it rains, then duck out to chicken-around when it lets up a bit.

Two eggs on Monday, five yesterday, and a surprising six today! ❤️One of the Eggers (Elsie) popped out her green egg (today's #6) in record time right after I'd finished cleaning out their coop around 4pm. I wouldn't have known to check the nest boxes again except for Martha "the Midwife" singing her distinctive egg song while watching poor Elsie on the nest at VERY close range. Elsie didn't even bother to sing for herself, just got up and brushed past nosy Martha on her way outside.

Whitings True Blue Martha and Easter Eggers Edna & Elsie are the most regular layers of my 8 pullets, almost daily (especially Martha).

Haven't had to touch any of my frozen or water-glassed egg supply so far this winter, the pullets are keeping DH & me and our local daughter & her BF fully supplied!🥰
I have found the same with my Azur Blues - they lay almost every day, I would say the Whitings are also a LeghornxAracauna high bred - high production egg layers.

Orillia is just getting hammered with lake effect snow, my niece is in Washago and has over 2’ already! It’s a good thing I now have her 4 elderly hens - it’s better they live here in my barn 😊

Not sure if your orillia family gets to Barrie but I am usually there most of the week if they want eggs any time - gosh I have 13 dozen in the fridge hahaha!

Today I found 17 eggs in various locations and can’t believe they didn’t freeze! As long as they are up off the floor though they seem to be ok.

Oh the dread of buying grocery eggs ! I bet your girls will start back up soon, I noticed today the daylight hrs are increasing.
Oh wow! We got about a foot here - my chickens are not impressed! Most of my Orillia family are older & not likely to make it to Barrie.
I had 2 eggs for breakfast & my pullet laid another egg, so now I have 2 left in the fridge 😅
On the bright side, a friend has a bigger chicken farm and I can always buy a dozen of his eggs instead of storebought. I may have to do that this weekend.

It's fortunate they didn't freeze - My dog got the one that froze last week in that extreme cold. He was thrilled 😂

I so thankful for my barn and snug Hen Houses where they roost, it’s just such a relief o know they are saecire and safe. I so glad I went with a Hen House in the barn rather than outside.

That sounds like a wonderful setup! Your girls must have so much fun in the horse stalls! My husband is coming up with all kinds of crazy ideas for future coop builds, the most recent was to make the coop subterranean. My thought was he could share some of his wood shop space and put a coop in there, but no, he’d rather dig a 6x6x6 hole in the ground with a shovel, lol. Seems like hard work to me!

I still have my water-glassed duck eggs from late last summer and have not had to use them. How long have you ever kept yours and they were still good???? Some people claim they have used them after 2 years. I would know for sure if they were bad if I went to fry one, lol. My Ducks were still laying up until today so I have a stock pile in the fridge.

There were 7 nice eggs waiting for me to pick up at 8:30 this morning. The girls' work for the day is done!

I opened up the outside wall of the coop and let them into their day run for the first time in around 2 weeks. Gave them a few bunches of curly leaf kale and some cabbage trimmings too.

I spent an hour shoveling out some of their day run this morning. It's cold and the wind is picking up, so only the brave are venturing out of their sheltered & covered pen
