I love having mother hen sitting on her eggs and raising chicks. They are so adorable beyond anything! Love it and love it!!
My excessively broody Wyandotte Pretty spring 2023 did sit on 2 eggs, hatched out 2 beautiful babies, raised them with love then pecked at them badly to kick them out at just 5 weeks. I took over after that.
Then 2024 spring Pretty did it again, with 1 egg and a beautiful chick, this time it lasted 6 weeks, and she was growling first for many days before she nastily peck at her kid to kick it out. I took over this one also.
Pretty had been mother hen from A-Z twice already. It is other's turn for motherhood. For now, no more hatching as I have 13 which is all I can manage.
The reason Pretty was mother hen in 2 consecutive years is that she came to me at 6 months with a friend she grew up with, the next day I found out her friend is a late boomer rooster, I returned him, she was so sad, did not or drink, a nervous headless chicken.
Pretty took sometime to bond with an older Wyandotte Meta she was housed with. Meta stood by her side while she was struggling to lay her first egg. Pretty was so loved by Meta and they were always together. As fate had it, Meta passed away after their short happiness, so Pretty was alone again, she does not bond with anyone else in the flock. I let her be mother hen twice with the hope that she creates her own flock with her kids, but that failed on both attempted. Her kids always stand near her or close enough not to get peck at by her.
She is broody so many times this spring, now summer we are in. Broody and molting at the same time. Still not bond with anyone in the flock. I love her very much and feeling her loss as well.
