I had something really, REALLY weird happen today and I'm almost afraid to say it out loud for fear no one will believe me. But it happened, it truely did! This morning while I was out cleaning the poop deck, Agatha (one of my EEs) was on her usual nest. I kinda smiled to myself as she "assumed the position" and dropped a beautiful blue egg. It's not one bit unusal for them to go right ahead about their business while I'm working in out there. Doesn't bother them a bit to lay their eggs with an audience, and I've seen several eggs laid while I'm in the coop. I picked it up from under her while she stood there, and put it in the basket with the other early morning eggs I'd already found. It was still wet!
Later this afternoon I went out to check for eggs again (is everyone as obsessive about that as I am?) and Agatha was back on the same nest. I was just about to shoo her out so I could see if there were other eggs laid by the rest of the girls when she stood up, hunched up, and dropped another egg! I was there - I saw it come out of her. I was stunned. She stood there for a minute - I stood there for a minute, then I picked up another wet Agatha blue egg. The first one was laid at 7:30 am and weighed 47 grams. The second one was laid at 5:15 pm and weighed 49 grams. Both are perfect. She has gone about her business for the rest of the evening as if nothing unusual happened. I've heard that sometimes production hens will lay two in one day - not very often but on occassion - but has anyone ever heard of an EE doing this? I'm not crazy, I didn't confuse her with another chicken (EEs are pretty doggone easy to tell apart and she's my only white and gold one) and I physically SAW each egg come out and HEARD it thunk on the floor of the nest. She also laid yesterday, because I had 19/19 for the first time.
Unfortunately we got 0/1 today! I was really thinking I was actually going to see one today and that I was actually going to witness it being laid. Penguin my BA was pacing back and forth in the very front of the coop, she was getting pretty loud, no egg song though, and then every now and them she would fly up on the perch then she'd pace, then she'd check out the revamped nest boxes, then she'd walk away and squat somewhere but nothing. I kept thinking, yay I'm gonna see it happen and know for sure it's her laying. I mean I'm like 98% sure because she shows all the signs but since I haven't witnessed it I can't say it without a doubt. Anyway no egg today, hopefully tomorrow.
Yesterday 21/30 plus I finally found a secret hiding place in our duck house the chickens have been using. I found 15 eggs in there I cooked them up and fed them back to the chickens because I don't eat/ sell eggs that I don't know how old they are.
