Chirping
Today is the first day I can somewhat say 12/12! One was a soft shell egg but still 12!

We're new to this and have only had chickens for about a year now. We have 22 hens. 12 of them are older (a couple of years old, I think) and we have 10 pullets (and 2 cockerels) that are about 12 weeks old. Last year at this time we were getting between 8 and 12 eggs per day, but the last few weeks we have only been getting 5 or 6. I think the pullets are just starting to lay because we have had one or two lately that are smaller eggs. I can't figure out why the older ladies aren't producing many eggs right now. Do you think it's because it's been a really hot summer? Could it be because the cockerels are maturing (one of them started crowing last week)? I know that one of hens has been broody lately and a second one just got over being broody. Are the older hens getting too old? Perhaps it's a combination of all of the above. We're hoping to get 15 to 18 eggs per day, so 5 is a big disappointment :-(
