How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

We're new to this and have only had chickens for about a year now. We have 22 hens. 12 of them are older (a couple of years old, I think) and we have 10 pullets (and 2 cockerels) that are about 12 weeks old. Last year at this time we were getting between 8 and 12 eggs per day, but the last few weeks we have only been getting 5 or 6. I think the pullets are just starting to lay because we have had one or two lately that are smaller eggs. I can't figure out why the older ladies aren't producing many eggs right now. Do you think it's because it's been a really hot summer? Could it be because the cockerels are maturing (one of them started crowing last week)? I know that one of hens has been broody lately and a second one just got over being broody. Are the older hens getting too old? Perhaps it's a combination of all of the above. We're hoping to get 15 to 18 eggs per day, so 5 is a big disappointment :-(

Most likely it's b/c the older ladies are finally at an age to molt, which they typically do in the late summer/early fall months. When they molt, they need the protein they typically use for eggs, for making new feathers. Doing both (molting/laying) at the same time would be too taxing for their bodies, so they stop laying. Plus, the shorter daylight hours causes them to lay less frequently.

The good news is that next spring, when their new feathers are in and the days start to grow longer, they will become laying machines and the eggs will be larger! After that, they will produce fewer eggs due to age.

We need to learn that they are living beings and, as such, are attuned to nature which dictates changes through the seasons.

I don't know why you need that number of eggs, but if it's that crucial, you probably will need a larger flock. Egg production will be much lower in winter (least amount of sunlight).

3/10 - year olds; 5/5 from new comers. What's the deal with that? Never had 3 out of 10 from my year olds chicken, lowest ever production. Is it the heat?
