How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I never had that much table scraps to give to my chickens to have such a problem but I bet they sure do adore you for the table scraps ..


I did find that a roo or hen under a year tend not to produce very good chicks even if you do get the eggs to hatch, better luck on your next attempt at hatching eggs .

I was bringing home a 5 gallon bucket full every day, then over the winter months I stopped because it was too dark by the time I got home. The chickens had already gone to roost.. Now that the days are longer I started bring food scraps home again, only this time I switched to a smaller laundry pail. It is still 3 or 4 gallons ( I haven't really looked to see how much it holds).
They are so trained to come running when I call them (especially if I have a bucket with me), that I use that technique on the rare occasion that I need to lock them up early or get them to come out of the woods before they want to. It is a rare treat for them to get to go into the woods. They use to be able to go in the woods all the time, but then a pack of 3 dogs started coming over for free chicken dinners! So I had to curtail the woodland wanderings. I just recently started letting them out into the woods again.

I'm okay with not having any of my eggs hatch, but I sure hope most of the eggs I set for my friend hatch! I'm a bit concerned because the temps in the incubator have been all over the place! One evening it said 104! I took the top off the incubator right away, but I don't know how long it had been that high ( or if that was even accurate). I am using a mercury thermometer inside the incubator, & the thermometer that was built on the incubator (no, I did not build it, it is store bought) and I am using the Brinsea Spot check. I wasn't having any luck with the Brinsea, it wouldn't read the temps, just kept flashing the L for low ( on all 3 hatches since I got it). I finally decided maybe the battery wasn't strong enough & replaced the battery & that seems to have done the trick. I still don't know how it could have gotten up to 104, I hadn't been messing with the dial or anything. Other times it has read low of around 87.5 degrees. And still other times it is spot on.
So who knows what will happen. I guess I'll know in about 6 or 7 days! Praying for some chicks for my friend. I know she bought some of the eggs and some of them are eggs from her own chickens.

Oh, I almost forgot, 16 eggs today. We only had a high of 51, much cooler than what we had been having for most of last week.

11-12 I can't remember. I think there was either a soft shelled egg layed in the nest box or someone at an egg BC today 6 of the eggs in one nest box were ruined. I'd be willing to bet it's another soft shell from my three new 50% English orp layers(one is a mix and they're sisters) been getting one almost every day. Think I may have actually gotten one from them today but I can't be sure yet. Still with four of my regular layers broody(yes two of the birds I'm talking about are silkies and amazing layers) I'm grateful for the thought of new layers plus the girls are going on 5-6 months but we're put behind when I almost lost them to cocci and then when one of them got an impacted crop. They've had a hard road so far so I've been very patient. but I'm thrilled to know they're starting up.

Okay guys, I've got a question...

Yesterday I got seven eggs from my girls.

There's a coop I haven't used in...three weeks? Four? Five? Idk...
But, I left the door open and the free Rangers had access to said coop. Yesterday, I was cleaning all the pens, and happened to look at the coop from just the right angle. In the laying box, hanging on the side, were 15 eggs!
The free ranging hens are 4 bantam Cochin and 6 Ameraucana who I didn't know were laying yet. But two of these eggs were green, 2 were blue, and three were pinkish. So i think the Aneraucanas actually are laying.
I have no idea how old these eggs are, but some could easily have been layed yesterday.
I hope the eggs from the bantam Cochins are pure. Since I didn't think the Ameraucana hens were laying, they have been exposed to Ameraucana, Silkie, Polish, Cochin, and Serama roosters. Chances are the eggs are fertile, and I'm very interested to try and hatch them. They're not old enough to be losing weight, since they all weigh about what an egg should.
So my question is, should I pull out my spare incubator and try to incubate these guys? Is the risk of explosion too high?

T Jordan, hi and I am so sorry for all you are going through now. Prayers and hugs! on the chicken math matter, um yes I did! 2 new mottled bantam Cochin girls and 9 coturnix quail. Quail pens are starting to be built and the two little ones are in with my LF Cochins. Stumpy has already taken to them thankfully. He waddled over if one starts a distress sound. So funny to see, he is like 15xs her size!

my poor baby (5yrs old) started showing signs this morning. Fever, tummy ache, hurting. Lots of hugs and yummy Popsicles for him.

unless you live somewhere it has been realy hot, I would incubate and candle at 10 days
