I've gotten one so far.. Mine tempt me out there to feed them with one egg, then I feed and water them, then they usually give me about 2-3 more, 4 hens...

Sorry if this is off the topic but my wife and I are just beginning the idea of raising chickens and we were wondering:
When do chickens first start laying?
Can you buy chickens that are almost ready to lay or should you buy chicks instead?
What does an average "chick" cost at a farm equiptment store?
Do you have to have a Rooster to get eggs?
