How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

So, back on page 3925, 3 days & 23 hours ago, I posted about finding the eggs in the nest uncovered and very cold, but said that I put 4 of them in the incubator, "just in case". Well, it turns out that that was a good idea

Last night, I went down to check on them, thinking that nothing would have happened because they were already dead. So, you can imagine my surprise, when I found 1 chick had hatched and was alive and doing great! and a second egg had a pip. This morning, I checked again before I left for work and the pipped had not progressed any more, so I figured it hadn't made it. This evening I went down to check and took my flashlight, figuring I would candle the eggs, but lo and behold, the pipped egg was beginning to zip!

Not sure if it will have enough energy to finish the job or not, but I am so surprised that anything hatched at all and this 2nd egg seems to be progressing....

15 eggs today

Tomorrow is when the 2nd broody's eggs should start hatching, if they do, then I will slip the chick(s) from the incubator under the 2nd broody! I thought about slipping them under the 1st broody, but I think there will be too many days age difference between the 1 chick that hatched on April 6th and these new chicks.

So the 2nd cold egg hatched late last night and is doing great. Today when I went to collect eggs, I heard chirping. I couldn't tell if it was from the lone chick or from the 2nd broody nest. I finally noticed a yellow chick in the 2nd broody nest, but Momma wasn't tucking her under. She was push over in a corner getting cold. Then I noticed a black chick that looked dead, it was shoved over in the corner too. I was able to get them both out of the nest. I put them in the incubator in the house. The black chick never came around, it was already dead. The yellow chick is fluffing up. I haven't seen it stand on it's feet yet, so....
I sat out in the coop for about an hour to see if any more were going to hatch and if momma was going to take care of them or shove them aside, but of course none hatched while I was out there. I had planned on putting the 2 chicks from the cold eggs under the broody when her eggs started hatching, but now I am very reluctant to try that.

16 eggs today.

Oh, and I think I need to worm my flock. I have to read up first and see if it's okay to do when chicks are present and drinking the medicated water. I hate to worm them while they are laying so well, but I also have a lot of messy tail/vent feathers ( and worms or too many treats are the only causes I can think of).

it is tough I really lack the good broody but plan on a couple of
Silkies in the new coop to be my broody's... I am sorry you aren't having
much luck that way either
