How many eggs do maran lay?

hi, i have young maran who stopped laying last year about july and has not started again. she seems healthy, in fact she looks great, good colour in her comb, and nice up standing tail. she has the same diet and conditions of my other hen who all lay okay. suggestions greatly received. jo.

I have 3 BCMs, one rooster and 2 hens. My girls are consistently laying one a day and they are dark eggs too. We plan on breeding them in the spring. My rooster is so friendly and the hens are very mild mannered. I think they're an awesome breed

I have only one black copper maran, and she is the worst layer of all the breeds I've owned. We've gotten 1 egg in the last 6 months. She is young (approaching 2 years) and is not currently molting.

She did start to lay very early (~17 weeks) and laid well (about 4 eggs a week) during her first year. But now, in her second year, she is essentially non-productive.

I'm hoping I just got a "bad" hen because I do love the breed and their egg color. In terms of personality, our BCM is one of my faves -- very docile, easy to handle, and kind of silly.

This is just a guess, but if your in the northern hemisphere with shortened daylight hours? Your girl may have gone into a late fall molt which would have shut egg laying down and then immediately shortened days put her into winter break.

One of my 3 yr old BCMs did this exact same thing last year, going 8+ months. This year for the first time I supplemented lights in January for hatching and just now started getting eggs from her, 3 so far.

I'm not saying to do this if your not worried about getting eggs. I'm saying I would just be patient a little longer, as the days get longer hopefully that will kickstart your girl into giving you eggs again.

Yes, I'm sure supplemental lighting would help, but my other hens do just fine in the winter without it -- they take 4 - 8 weeks off, depending on the breed. This girl is way outside the norm.

It could just be a laying glitch within that particular bird. I have a whiting true blue hen that started laying around 20 weeks then abruptly stopped. I have no idea why she stopped, but she didn’t lay again for several months. She wasn’t molting and it wasn’t winter. Then after a few 4-5 months she started regularly laying long, skinny pullet bullets with a thin shell. After a few months of bullets, now the eggs have started to resemble a normal shape again.

What a crazy scenario! Thanks for sharing, this gives me hope!
