How many hens???

It depends on the breed, first of all. Some breeds lay 5-6 eggs a week, some lay 3-4. So if you get some exceptional layers you'll only need a few, but if you get a less productive breed you may need quite a few hens to meet the demand.

Also how many eggs does your family consume on average in a week?

We are a family of 4 and have six hens, two lay and they lay every day. We will have many over my friend has three production red and has egg left over and they are family of 4 so I would go w 4-6 hens not more if you don't wanna sell

I would get two more. It depends on how many eggs your family eats. We are a family of 5 and started with 6, but then decided I would rather have extras then not enough, so we went with 9 hens and plan to give some away and maybe sell some to neighbors.
