How many people eat there chickens on this form

i dont like chicken, i dont like pork, dont like lamb bacon dont like beef so am not being hypacritical, thanks.

I used to be of the mindset that I would never eat my own birds, but my mind has been pretty thoroughly changed.

Though I have yet to butcher any of my excess cockerels, I certainly will once I've learned well enough how.

My thought on it is this. Meat purchased from the store comes from birds that were probably raised in deplorable conditions, never interacted with, and terrified at the time of butchering.

My birds are raised in a completely loving environment, petted daily, and won't even tremble at butchering time.

It will probably break my heart the first few times, but at least I know /my/ birds have lived a good life.

I don't think I'll eat my old hens when they stop laying, but that's a completely Personal choice.

I would have no problem doing that when the girls laying days were done but I would be the only one in my house doing so by a margin of 4 to 1. But I must say now that I have seen my BR in full molt, there really isn't a whole lot to them and don't know if its worth the work to dress them.

adzactley every one has there own opinion and no matter what people read it wont change there mind

We eat our extra roos.
It was a bit hard for me at first but I've desensitized myself to it.
It really is stressful having too many roosters, very stressfull. So I actually get relieved when one/some get killed.
Next step- bantam roosters.

Love that description of d'Anvers! We used to have d'Anvers and the rooster was just like that except he would attack the feed scoop and me! He attacked our daughter every time she feed him at the county fair and when we would ask people if they wanted to see him attack. It was cute their but not so cute every morning during feed time.
We sold the whole line we had of d'Anvers for that reason.
I agree, probably would not be much of any meat to eat either.

I'm still new to raising chickens but my plan from the get go was to eat the hens when they stop laying... as well as eating any roos that I can not rehome... I can't have roosters within city limits here... and regardless of the breed I think I would try it, tomorrow is my first attempt to butchering/processing, muscovy ducks and a pekin... I am excited and am really hoping everything goes well.

i eat my hens after they turn a year when egg production isnt as good as it use to be.
i think its way better then buying store bought chicken poor creatures suffer a short life thats just horrable... at least i know mine live a happy well fed and as much room as they want to run around!! thought they like to stay close to home..
