I've had two BO's in years past- a Bantam hen and standard roo. They were both sweet, smart and docile. I started my new flock this spring with two feed store chicks. The RIR is sweet but shy and easily frightened. The BO is a terror! She bullies her sister, guards the food and pecks my hand whenever I reach into the cage. She IS affectionate. She likes to be held but I have to firmly prevent her from hopping to my shoulder. I think she's dominant enough. I would call her more terrier than Golden Retriever.

Just starting to raise chicks (5 weeks now) and the buffs we have are wonderful. Very friendly. Here's a pic.

Very nice choice of Breed. This is a breed in high demand for now. They seem to be doing very well at the shows. I have a Black who lays 5 days outta 7. And a dozen or so Buffs too. Sweet gentle, and interested in your every move. And their eggs are huge and tasty.
Looking forward to hearing how they turn out.

I am in Oak Ridge, about 1.5 hrs from you I believe . . . and am going to be going to the show next Saturday. If you find out someone is going to be there that has Buff Orpingtons I would be glad to pick them up for you and then meet you halfway between Oak Ridge and Cleveland somewhere for you to get your chicks. I don't know that that would be a possibility but let me know if you want me to pick up some chicks for you. That would at least maybe be a way for you to get some quality BO chicks and then only have a 45 min drive, guess 1.5 by the time you do round trip. Like I said, let me know, I tend to check BYC posts a lot or you can send me a PM if you like.

I want to second the comments about Hinkjc's birds. I haven't had the best luck with shipped eggs with the exception of the eggs I got from them. Not only did they survive the postal service but two power outages as well!

I agree with jywel417. You pay just as much to raise a production quality bird as you do with an Exhibition line bird. IF he is at that show and knows what is going on, that is what I'd do.
And you said you do not want hatchery quality.
Do go for it...

We have 9 Buff Orps right now they are about 7 weeks old, I've attached a picture of them with our Black Astralorps and our Light Brahmas. They are very easy to handle thus far and they love eating out of my hand for a special treat.
