How many people here raise their chickens as pets?

Oh, and some insight .. I have a sister and brother-in-law who farm, plenty of friends in the farming industry, a father who was huge in the rodeo circuit - oh my goodness, don't get me started with THAT!!! haha - a brother who hunts, meat eating family and friends ... And guess what??? I love them all!!!

I treat my animals better than most people treat their kids. They get the best food, the best home, the best quality of life as far as I know and what I can afford , and people think I'm crazy for it. But that's OK. The good thing is that this world is big enough for everybody, and this forum seems to be friendly to everybody even if they don't agree or can't understand.
I just found out the neighbor kids are throwing rocks at my chickens. Now that makes me angry enough to start a fight.

Yes, I agree with jenniferlamar70 - definitely go speak with their parents! They might not even know that it's going on. Kids do the stupidest things - especially if they are with their peers. If the parents aren't receptive, I would tell them that they've unfortunately given you no choice. You will be documenting and videotaping every occurrence to take to the authorities. Hopefully it won't get get to that point. Ugh. So sorry!

Ok, back to the original post. I would have to say that our chickens are pets. We enjoy getting eggs from them too though. I would never eat one of my chickens. Mostly because I don't like chicken. When somebody says "it tastes like chicken", I say "I'll pass". (Except for frog legs, I love them.) I am not a vegetarian by any means. Actually don't like many vegetables at all. Meat and potatoes!
We got chickens because my wife likes to watch them scratch in the yard. Eggs are just a nice benefit. My wife likes to bake a lot.
If you figure the time and money we invest in them, the eggs are probably costing us $50 per dozen. I probably spend more on just the meal worms than eggs would cost at the store! (Not really, but close)
So they must be pets. Why else would she spend so much time trying to come up with names for all 40 of them?

Lmfao yes all ours have names too. I don't think you really save money in the end either. After Healthcare, food, treats, housing etc... we could have purchased a million eggs from the store lol. They are fun though and very relaxing. When I've had a really long day I like to go out to the coop and just watch them. As for being a vegetarian that's a personal decision and not for everyone. I do however like the health benefits. I'm very high risk for type 2 diabetes. I have had gestational diabetes with 3 out of 4 children. I really wanted a healthier lifestyle for my whole family bit I didn't force them. To much lol. But I do all the cooking and I also love to bake from scratch. If I don't cook meat everyone else just kind of fell in line. Honestly in the beginning I didn't like many vegetables either. I learned that how things are cooked makes a huge difference in flavor. I have now actually learned how to like alot of things that I didn't before. My kids too. I'm so proud of them. Most kids wouldn't be able to stick it out but mine have put in an actual effort. Love these kids.

Yep, my five, spoiled, bantam princesses are definitely pets

I love bantams. They are adorable!! What breed do you have? My favorite is my polish bantam rooster. He is so goofy lol.

How exciting. I actually have some large fowl Cochins in my incubator right now. I've heard they can make great broody mama's lol. I really want a croad langshan. I've heard they lay the most beautiful eggs. I also have some silkies in our incubator. I just love how fluffy they are. I told my grandma I was going to get her one to go with her fluffy shih tzu pups lmao..
