Don't know if you are interested, I live in eastern Canada. I sell 1 doz for $2.50. Store bought are $2.75 & $5.99 for free range organic. My hens free range. Can't fill all my request.

I Live in La. and sell my eggs for $1.50 to $2 a doz. some customers that are willing to pay the 2 dollars a dozen they get all good sized large to XL eggs, the cheapscapes that will barely pay a buck-fifty get whatever I put in the container usually 8 large and 4 med to small game type eggs and everybody's hunkiedory with the prices. It just amazes me at what it takes for people to think they are getting a deal on things especialy when they think they're getting somthing cheaper or on sale. I still think they are worth more but people just won't pay it, I guess I'm fortunate just to get what I get for them.

Remember that this is a forum who keep chickens as pets, and just want to offset part of the cost of their hobby.

Therefore, the vast majority of them are selling eggs for a significant loss.

When you try to figure out what you should charge, you need to figure in...

Cost of the birds to purchase, and cost to raise to laying age
Housing costs
Bedding, waterers and cost of feeders
feeding the birds
Losses of birds
Egg carton costs
Marketing, including webpages, etc.
YOUR LABOR - VERY significant
Cost of replacement birds for poor layers, those lost to predators, etc.
Predator control - such as lights, electric netting, fence charger, livestock guardian dog, feed, vet costs, etc.
Other costs, such as tarps for shelters, repairs, etc.
Medications
Vet bills
Costs of bird fanciers membership, and so it continues....

PLUS remember that you have to feed/house/tend your birds in winter when their output is insignificant, and not nearly enough to even cover their food bill!

I have a large flock, and therefore cannot afford to charge what the majority of the people on this list charge, as I have to make a profit.

Therefore, I do not sell to my neighbors who buy from hobby people who keep their birds in cages and tiny pens. Instead, I sell to high class restaurants who want to support truly humane farming, and are willing to pay for it, and at farmer's markets where they are willing to support farmers.

Please note, that I realize that most hobby chicken owners raise their chickens well - just not in my neck of the woods.

Best wishes,
Rachel, TX

I give a lot of my eggs away to people that I love -or owe big time (my veterinary friend, my brother-in-law who helped build the coop, etc) but I have lots of neighbors and friends who are happy to pay $4 a dozen for my eggs. In this area, free range, organic eggs are $4.50 or more from commercial sources. I do feed my chickens organic feed which is VERY expensive, and they have a LOT of freedom, and are very happy. This matters to many people, and thus far I can't really keep up with the demand. lI don't think there's any profit here, but it does help defray the costs a bit.

In Bergen County New Jersey I charge $2.50 per dozen. I've actually had a few people who buy from me tell that I should charge more. A few have even given me $5- for the dozen, and wouldn't accept the change. Perhaps in the Spring, when I hope I'll be getting more than 7 to 9 eggs a day from my 16 hens, I will charge slightly more.
